Best and worst FPS game you've ever played?

So much hate on the CoDs and BFs. D:
Has it ever occurred to you guys that your dislike for these games is probably only a result in a) your broadening tastes and b) the player-base?

 

The problem with COD is that the makers take succes for granted, so they just slap some better graphics and new levels on it, call it done, release it, enjoy watching tens of thousands of people buying whats basically a overpriced map pack for the previous game.
Tough due to the increased succes of minecraft, something in me is saying that black ops 2 will be one of the last effortless cods.

TBH, I see nothing wrong with that.
People have been making no-brainer updates of old games since BEFORE the invention of the computer, but unless they're actively making the games WORSE, then there's really no issue. On top of that, I'd argue that for now, we're actually at the full extent of what can be done with that style of game, and it's fun. If I was someone who was solely into those kinds of games, as many of the people who're less into the "gaming" culture are, then that's literally all I'd want: More maps and graphics.

Hexen 1 and 2
Heretic
Metroid Prime (I don't know if this counts)
Medal of Honor Frontline/Rising Sun
Perfect Dark
TimeSplitters 2

Worst FPS games:

Call of Duty
Battlefield
Halo (Except the original)

 

See, there we go. I'm sorry, but however ground-breaking games like Doom were back in the day, ANY of the CoDs BFs of Halos is always more fun. Period. Every single aspect that made Doom great has been improved upon.

 

The problem is, if they WANTED, i'm sure they could improve on the game, but they simply dont.
AAA games have really become no-brainer updates, but they COULD improve them if they tried, they simply dont try anymore.

 

I generally tend to think more along these lines: They could improve games drastically, if they were allowed. One of the biggest issues with a publisher-driven model is that it quite literally makes it about the money. The reality is, if you want to find a semi-recent FPS which strays from the CoD/BF stereotype, chances are it was hardly a success.
TBH, I actually want to see just how far that last statement goes. Here, let's do a little experiment! Go find as many FPSes as you can find, write down their names and report back to me. Together, we'll see just how much merit has come from both sides of the 'Originality' spectrum! :D

 

99% of the people who hate ok CoD are basically like the edgy 12 year olds who say they want to kill Justin Bieber. Justin Bieber is probably actually a pretty nice guy, people like to belittle popular things because it makes them feel better than that thing.

CoD games have actually changed a fair amount with each iteration, so much so that I often wish they'd changed less. Regardless of that I don't see why people complain; tetris games are for the most part the same every year, why does no one say that tetris programmers are lazy?

It's fine to say that you don't like CoD, but are they the worst FPSes ever? I think you could easily find worse.

 

The best FPS's I have ever played are Team Fortress 2 , CoD, GoldenEye, and AoS.

I don't think I've ever played a "bad" FPS. I can usually separate the good games from the bad ones - by just watching short game-play clips(this usually decides whether or not I purchase/download the game)

 

I don't say it because I don't have to watch Tetris advertisements during every commercial break.
Tetris isn't released every damn year and when it is it doesn't cost as much as mind-blowing, amazing games which define or even their own genres.
And for the God's sake, when they get fucktrillions of dollars for every game they could at least make a new engine.

Not to mention hiring a single screenwriter.

 

Best I've played: Timesplitters 2, and Timesplitters: Future Perfect. I have a hard time picking which of the two is better. I've always thought that the simplest way to explain those games is Goldeneye 007 cranked up on speed.

Worst I've played: Call of Duty: World at War (Wii). I don't play many FPS games, so I haven't been exposed to many shitty ones.
