I dunno why this thread exists, I guess I got bored. BUT ANYWAY......

Many current gen games support DLC (downloadable content) as it is a way to get more money off of something that you need to only buy once to enjoy it. However, most of these companies sell them at ludicrously high prices, such as the developers at Infinity Ward and Ubisoft, who often sell DLC's at 15-20 dollars.(11.54-15.38 Euros) For example, Infinity Ward with Modern Warfare 3 (blegh) they sold map packs with very cruddy maps and low file sizes for around 10 bucks each, yet lots of people bought it because they felt like it would make the game better and make it last longer. Sure, you could argue that it DOES make the game more expansive, but was it worth the hard earned money of the consumer?

Let's take a look at Borderlands 2, the game costs 60 dollars, assuming you and 3 other people want to play co-op, that in total is 240 bucks. Now, the season pass costs a total of 30 dollars. So, if you all want to go through the the DLC together as you enjoyed the main game, it comes to a total of 120$ for the DLC. a total of 360 dollars is gotten from a small group of people. Which in reality is a large amount of money for a couple of discs which can manufactured for around one dollar.

Another issue is that if the game is good enough, you shouldn't need DLC in the first place. If a game is lacking in anything so much that it requires the player to pay real money to get what should be there in the first place? Great, complete games that are well rounded enough that they don't need DLC such as Hotline Miami, Faster Than Light, and others. (Though I honestly wouldn't mind a level editor for Hotline Miami....) If it really needs something added, why not just update the game?

The upside however, is that it supports the economy and the developers who could use the money to put it towards the development of a sequel. Developers who really need money to continue the game would be one to benefit from releasing a DLC.

Another upside is that lots of developers put more time and effort into DLCs than the main game. I strongly believe that "quality over quantity" is a valid reason as to why DLC can be worth it. You know the game Skyrim? Yeah, probably not, but anyway it was a great game that had some pretty good DLC. Same with it's predecessor Oblivion, which also had some great DLC that was fun to play.
Anyway, what do you think? DLC is the best thing ever? DLC sucks and should be removed from the internet? Or do you have mixed feelings on the subject?

While PixieKeira's comment was dumb I don't think that socialism precludes video games. Also I think DLC is perfectly fine but I am too lazy to get into this when the OP is obviously pretty charged to continue ranting about DLC.

Lies, the skyrim dlc was horrid. About 4 hours of gameplay each. This is relevant image.jpg

I like DLC, but only if the developers make the DLC after they publish the game. For example, NSMBU is doing a pretty good job with DLC. But, I can't stand when companies hold back pieces of the game so they can make a quick buck.

I'm okay with the DLC model used in Magicka. It comes in cheap bite-sized chunks, the uninteresting bits can safely be ignored.

But fuck games like Skyrim that package totally unrelated content in their DLC. Make a proper expansion for that you lazy assholes. If I want crossbows I shouldn't have to buy vampires.

Skyrim had 4 hour long DLC? What? If you just breeze through the main plot of it I wouldn't be surprised.

I like DLC when it's good and not too expensive. Stuff like Lair of the Shadow Broker for Mass Effect 2 or Shivering Isles for Oblivion.

    dlc...???

Seriously, i stoped buying any games which have downloadable content in ways of DLC's, for me these assholes just cut out the good maps/ and whatever else of a game then sell it for a full price, but actualy they give you a half game and the option to buy the other pieces of the game for almost the same cash again...

Actualy anyone buying games with DLC contents are dumb people to me, no offense but you all let ur ass punk by shitty game developers which do it the mafia way... well not mafia, but in an ugly way i cant understand.... do they not earn enough cash by selling milions of the original game already? Do they realy need more cash? WTF?

Get rid of games with DLC and support studios which sell you FULL GAMES, or support people like MM which go also the "correct" way and dont punk her clients...

Also, the picture of "One" does describe it pretty well.

What you are saying is assuming that ALL game devs remove content from their game to make it a DLC. That is not the case. Games like MMOs have Expansion packs you have to pay for, I don't see anyone complaining about them. If the DLC is very high quality, developed separately from the main game after it's release, why not enjoy it? It gives you more content for a great game (I'll mention Shivering Isles from Oblivion again as that gave you content for almost a FULL game)

Im not aware of all the dlc's i can see what you say on MMO's, but also there.... why not bring it out as real expansion pack?

Mostly it's cauze that would not be enough stuff, some maps and shit cant simple be considered as expansion pack, that's why it's called DLC....

Also, i am 101% sure that some game studios do cut out parts of the game (maps, weapons and some other stuff) and then sell it later as DLC's.

Anyway, such crap only works cauze most people are sadly retarded enough to buy the game twice...

  13. Wow, that's some serious accusations. Do you have any proof? ps its trolling

Only a few publishers/devs do this, mostly Capcom. However there are instances where developers plan the DLC before the release of the game but only start working on it after the game is released.

Whether they do or not they usually also save the 'better' things for DLC, or I've seen very often videos about games where a dev will say "And we have these great ideas for DLC, like a floating city so you can do X"

Point is DLC is pointless period, and asking for DLC on an indie game is some shit that you gotta be fucking extra retarded for.

You know that 'supports the economy' is a very vague statement you used because you probably have no idea what you actually meant by it but it sounded good and is something that people want to hear. There are many better ways to help stimulate an economy, and I can guarantee that sending the money outside of your country to purchase a game not made there isn't on the top 10 list.

But that isn't how it SHOULD be. You used a very shitty argument to be honest.

    If quality > quantity
    and quality = DLC
    then DLC is superior

There are a few flaws here.
1)DLC is not quality, it's not quality of a corporation, it's not always quality of product, at most it might be quality for a specific game but it's not because DLC is quality, it's because that company put more priority into the DLC because their art assets needed something to work on while the programming got completed and usually to milk more money out of you than the original game you'd be getting, in other words, what you said has no actual basis and cannot be supported
2)"DLC is higher quality", this is also pretty much bullshit, what are you basing this on? DLC that costs $10 and isn't half as good as the game that you can get on sale for $20 a few months after isn't quality. DLC is usually almost as buggy as the game, goahead and look at Borderlands 2 or Borderlands 1, or any other game with DLC, the core game and the DLC are usually laden with bugs, the DLC doesn't fix these, it simply has them as well.

People could talk about DLC for a long time, but at the end of the day, retards will usually purchase it, standard consumers will purchase what they want, and it keeps on happening, started with invasive DRM, DLC, and now it will continue with 'always online', but at the end of the day at least unlike some people who purchase that shit I'll be able to say I played games but never fueled that bullshit.

Why is it wrong for consumers to purchase DLC when they want to? I've purchased a lot of DLC that I felt was worth the price.

Cauze they MAKE the conumers purchase DLC's :P

If they would just wait sometimes 2-3 months more for the game release, they wouldn't need any DLC's and would go the way how video games actualy have been gone for years, they change it and all the people do is accept it cauze mostly for the reason, "hey i got the cash anyway, i dont give a fuck".

If all would do the same, we can expect that all games will have that shity DLC one day... (which is pretty much the direction which the most are going already).

Anyway, maybe some have a diffrent view on that, but mostly just cauze they are already used to it and/or got the cash anyway...

i didnt say they forced you to buy a dlc, but when they actualy make the best parts of the game as dlc 2-3 months after game release aviable to download, then they make you buy dlc.... dont you understand/see that?

DLC was 10 years ago not needed, the only reason why it's here now is to make more cash....
