Bedrock absorbs Keg explosion - or am I mistaken?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by crackwise, Jan 6, 2014.

  1. its clearly a bug. if anything, i would expect other sides receive more damage if one side is blocked by bedrock.
there is a probably related bug with kegs damaging (or rather killing) players and shops through bedrock, often from ridiculous distances. and its even more ridiculous because of the 1st bug, as it does no damage to tiles

I reiterate, the cross-shaped tile-destruction blast is neat, but the Chebyshev-like (Square) entity-destruction is not fun.

It's kind of the same thing with water... except you can't see the explosion (which makes sense). The water kind of "nerfs" the keg in a sense.

Usually a shockwave gets more deadly when it is exerted on solids, and liquids.
Interesting to note that kegs are less effective in water, I could've sworn it had no effect, other than on the particles.

  5. Exactly, boea - path of least resistance. I've wasted a keg more than once because it was sitting on / near bedrock, and the bedrock totally noms the explosion.

keg is completely useless if there is a single bedrock block below it. The same is actually true of all explosives, but most noticeable with kegs: bombs, kegs, and mines will never damage blocks if placed on top of bedrock.

But they will get doors, for some reason. ::P:

Doors are especially fragile against high explosives, but also boulders. It's like they're litmus paper for broken game mechanics.

At least with kegs, they are telegraphed like all hell, and can be prevented, and stolen.

Bomb arrow hails, not so much, especially with how easy it is to get to the ideal angle, and the ability to spam arrows anyways.

Once there was a tower built on bedrock. 4 keg was thrown at it, no damage. We even threw bombs but they didn't harm it either, and none of it touched bedrock, it's a pretty annoying OP tower. :/

    That's just good placement.

I suspect that bedrock has some kind of hack-ish implementation whereby all non-specific block-damaging entities are effectively disabled if their effect would be to destroy a bedrock block. For instance, the engine might check if a bedrock block is in range of a keg explosion, and if it finds one, it mutes the explosion to protect the bedrock.
This would work fine for catapult rocks, but I think when this check is due to an explosion, the engine can't selectively protect certain blocks because there is no indirection between the single explosion object and its effect on all surrounding blocks.

Frankly I feel this feture shouldn't be removed, it encourages good building and placement.

If literally any map I have seen on any of the popular servers was half decent in comparison to the ones commonly used in classic I might have even considered maybe partially agreeing with you just a little bit, perhaps.

I think the issue is that the explosion entities overlap the bedrock tiles, and get summarily fucked by it.

think of it like that annoying bug with games that have poorly stitched maps.
your bullets get eaten by invisible polygons that hang off the edges of poor seams.

pretty much, whatever is the explosion entity, all/some of its raycasts are similarly eaten by the bedrock.

This just rewards good building and encourages people to get over towers some other way than spamming kegs
