For those of you looking for a much less confusing version of dwarf fortress you may want to check out towns, a shameless rip-off of dwarf fortress, but there is still plenty of reason to check it out if you aren't into the megaintense realism with shitty graphics that is dwarf fortress

In an attempt to stay somewhat on topic I'll say that dwarf fortress is a BRUTAL game, I sent one of my slaves dwarfs down to a lava filled area. He (predictably) caught on fire, but to my suprise he ran into the room where everyone else was, lit half of everyone else on fire before i had to evacuate everyone into a lake. My entire alcohol supply was boiled away, half of all my stuff was burned down, and i didn't relize that midgets can't swim so a good chunk of them drowned. about 5 minutes later I got attacked by a bunch of elves since i tried to sell them wood, which apparently they dont like. I proceeded to throw my monitor out the window, fun game.

  2. I personally use these utilities when playing DF:

Soundsense - things happen, and music or voice is played!
DFHack - purely because it fixes a few bugs. I never go without fixmerchants.

Gnomoria is also a good DF lite type of game. Better than towns IMO.

  4. I might even do a basic tutorial for those who want one, regarding DF.

Yeah, I've had tentative looks at Towns, Gnomoria and A Game of Dwarves, but they all just make me want to play Dwarf Fortress, so I do.

@Noburu: using no tileset makes literally no difference. You just learn a different set of symbols.

Yes but I have to remember multiple colors of some symbol instead of looking and going OH FUCK SPIDERS.

Never had an issue with it, tbh.
Same goes for not using dwarf therapist. You just give them each manual therapy as they need it, instead of doing large-scale adjustments to their tasks etc.

I play vanilla DF except that I use a tileset. It's a square version of the normal tileset. :p
OCD demands that square rooms look square.

  11. Wolves aren't quite THAT vicious in the current version, though Dingoes and their giant counterparts have stepped up to the plate.

  13. Reading this thread made me play the game again. Good bye social life...

I just upgraded my dfhack and... good god it's grown. Aside from a number of bugfixes, it now has an in-game interface for workflows, improved rail-line routing, siege engine targeting, armour stands which hold armour, and a bunch of stuff that makes the game far less tedious (read: more fun)

Terry, you obviously misunderstand why DF has it's own brand of fun. :3

I just wanted to say hi. And say that a new release may come out soon.
