Profanity Filter Script/Mod?

We're actually considering this, as there's a client side text filter hook as well, and this could easily enough be tied to the kids_safe variable (or a separate text filter variable, whatever). Is there much interest in it though? Even something crude would take a bit of time (and undoubtably lead to some folk determined to have their words heard spelling things FU<K or similar).

 

TBH you could just turn off speech bubbles (and use ignore function if someone is using way too much foul language) and it would be alright. Sadly I don't think the game would be capable of filtering people's names (that they usually have as their nicknames on steam as well) and that's where I notice more of the profanity spam. Then again, being admin on the servers that I frequent most, I usually just warn people to cool it if I feel they're going overboard on caps lock and language, so maybe I'm not the best person to voice his opinion on this topic. I guess as an option toggled off by default, I really don't see any harm in this.

 

Of course, but we'll eventually end up with every word of something someone writes in game going through 1000 different variations of each word anyone considers offensive - not to mention anything ambiguous. It's a common "gotcha" with any profanity filter, I remember as a child being banned from some website by some "content filter" software my parents had installed because someone had "xXx" in their username at both ends, and that was a tagged word :^) Definitely something to be careful of if we do add it.

As people have suggested, the first thing to do about ignoring chat and the profanity therein is to go into options and turn the chat bubbles off, at least as an intermediate measure.

 

I'd like to see it just so I could tell more people to go fuck themselves and not hear them cry about it.

I would suggest adding some basics and letting users modify the file themselves, they could easily go download Nexon's world filter if they want to go overboard.

 

You could just ask Team17 for their text filter. Works to well.
