I am planning on migrating from dedimax to harmony-hosting.

    Why?
    Pros :
    • Their VPSes are higher quality. Instead of giving access to a virtual cores (often used by so many other people it's providing way less speed than it can), they're giving a PHYSICAL cores. Their I/O is overall faster : Better bandwidth, SSD disk space, and they can provide (free iirc) added HDD size.
    • The support is excellent, even if I'm not really going to need it
    • There is an integrated function for donating money to other people on their account so they can buy servers with it. It's more secure and easier for everyone. The most money people donates, the most servers we can host and for the longest guarenteed time. If, for example, someone could throw 3€ every month, it would help a lot.

    Cons :
    • Higher priced, but due to the quality.

    When?
I can spend 7€ a month the first times waiting for donations. This would allow running two servers at a time. 10€ a month could allow 4 servers at a time!
First, I will benchmark H-H machines to compare them with dedimax's. Even if I doubt dedimax will be better with H-Hs, it's still a good thing to verify - This is why I've done a little benchmarking tool this afternoon. I'll publish it as soon I've cleared it up a bit, hoping it can help others. To do this I've sent a mail to H-H to know if they could lend me the 6.99€ VPS to try it on - I think they'll accept but I can't be sure. Anyways it would worth buying one for a month for trying up.

Here's my turn to put a question : ShamWow, we'd need a forum group and a rather large convo for serious stuff around this. We need people donating regulary. I'll ask up Leo to know if he could help us with little donations over a month.

Are they paying you for advertising? Why we need people donating? We got my servers and PeggleFrank's server. I'm avaible about 7 hours daily, so just say anything and i can change one of my servers to whatever mod you want so we can test it.

To test mods you don't need super-mega-awesome host. 66-133 ping is good enough...

Aw I'm illuminati confirmed. If I was paid I wouldn't go say that on a forum with 4 people watching right?
Also this would allow hosting more modded servers in long term, not just mod testing.
A good server is not just determined by its ping. And how many servers can you provide?

You're both right. The more servers the better, way more mod diversity for people to try out. In response to Magic's question, I do have a group. Its called KAG Mod/Feature Testing.

EDIT: I'm fine with monthly donations, as long as there is an offical site that I can give my money to, not someone's paypal account.... gotta be wary these days <2

Another thing you guys could try is cycling mods every other day or so on just one server (preferably with some constant name). I personally would be a lot more likely to try out a mod if I know it's only being hosted for a short while longer. You could get a lot more focused interest that way. As it stands I often see people sprawled out around a bunch of small pop modded servers, and it's just a lot less interesting if there's only like 4 guys trying out a mod.

Yes, that's a pro i've stated on harmony hosting.
There's a page in which you can send money to a H-H account which can use it to rent a server.

Would much prefer having just one server with a cycling modlist. Having multiple servers in the server browser is just a waste, assuming only one will likely have players on it at any given time.

Why are you asking Leo? He's gone off about how the game is dying and how he's going to take down his servers multiple times now. I doubt he'd help you with your server; maybe, for someone less experienced, he would offer to help them with their server on the technical side of things (installing a mod onto the server or something effortless), but supporting your server monetarily seems more like a hope than an expectation.

Getting funds to keep the server up seems like it'll be an issue. I don't have money to spare for it, and the people who are actually going to be using the mod testing server are going to be few in number. If anyone, either you're going to be paying for the server or another individual is. A group effort is unlikely, considering the amount of people we have here.

Totally agree. Why we even have more than 2 servers for testing public mods, when there aren't more then 10 people that actually want to test mods? We need to test mods that have lots of players (fun ctf, factions, aphelion's RP, wizard wars, eventually shiprekt+), not some random mods from Resources that noone will play on
