Do you remember timers? A forced end is horrible - sudden death would be the exact same or even worse.

The difference between timer that just ends game with tie is that it doesn't give players any chance to win. In sudden death teams still need to fight each other to see which is better. Teams still decide about their loss/win just on different circumstances

It's a hack. We should look at the alternatives instead.

You say "look at the alternatives" as if there were other attractive options that had been suggested. I for one would like to see a decent alternative that's not "leave current system as is."

There are tonnes of alternatives. Iirc. stalemates are one of the most discussed issues? There's a reason for these stalemates, and to end them with timers and the like can be considered a hack - not a solution of the actual problem.

There are a lot of alternative suggested, but few of them are attractive; either because they fundamentally change the way the game mode is played, or are simply weird/fiddly/unfun.

That can be discussed. I find improved maps an attractive way to prevent stalemates. Quality-wise there's a huge difference between official maps - while some consistently ends with a 'GG' others often ends as stalemates.

And improved maps will always help issues; however, I'd contend that having them as one's sole answer to stalemates (outside of a vote) is unnecessarily limiting ourselves to few tools in the toolbox. Why not better maps and better endgame mechanics?
