Recently picked up a fairly fast server with peering and stuff.

Would anyone be interested in a "closed area" aussie-only server where bandwidth used doesn't count toward your quota on iiNet and Internode?

I just want to make this clear for Australian players... This will mean no bandwidth restrictions(translated to: server disappearing after so many gigabytes) for players located in Australia/having an Australian IP, i.e. not utilising any of the expensive underwater cables

I'm guessing this is a colo/datacenter/network which is a customer of each and therefore on-net for both ISPs such that they don't give a shit about data to/from them?

Yeah, testing some hardware before production and might possibly end up with some spare cpu/ram.
Bandwidth is technically "capped" to 20Mbps, 95th percentile without a quota except for what can be hit at max.
The thing is it'd have to firewall/blackhole out non-peered IPs or else it would cost an unnecessarily huge amount in traffic to be doing even 5meg out because *all* of it would qualify as "non-prepaid overage"

Also looking into iiNet, it appears that "Traffic between clients and peering is now counted in your allocation." and that only legacy/grandfathered in plans get free peering traffic... lame

edit: that being said, how does the master server work? is it possible to only show the server on the public list for certain CIDRs or ..

I'm with optus -.- but I have a 500gb monthly limit that I don't use much of, but slow speeds ;_; I don't know if this server would be better for me or the same as the other aussie servers, but more aussie servers is always a good thing.

If it is what I think it is, its performance should be much better for AU people on those ISPs than servers hosted elsewhere

No, it would not be possible to only list it in the master server for certain people. Your options are to have it listed for everyone and you would firewall everyone except the CIDRs you want, or you don't list it on the master and AU people would need to know about it by hostname or IP address

edit: also, I'm very glad I don't live in AU.

From a networking point of view we're still stuck in the bronze age though ;)

Put in the server info text who can and can't join. Anyone blindly clicking and wondering why they get DC'd deserves the confusion.

Plus... is there a reason that other people outside of these ISPs *shouldn't* play on this server? Yeah it might be best for customers of those one or two ISPs, but would it somehow be bad for the concept of this server if some kiwis or someone on other ISPs joined?

I'm vastly confused, is there some strange way bandwidth restrictions work over there? Is there some sort of ballache over connections used to and from Australia to the rest of the world or something?

Yes, australian ISPs are notorious for having very low usage caps (like 10GB per month. I don't think they're that low any more, but they suck)
