Large hardon collider? That insinuates some very... interesting things to say the least... I believe you mean Hadron Collider?

What do you mean by launch? I mean, they already use it, and as far as I know we haven't been engulfed in a tidal wave of anti-matter yet, sooo....

Indeed, they've accumulated like 6 months worth of data or something already. It's a matter of processing it now.

Can you articulate why you're uncomfortable with this, synth?

Also, worth mentioning every time something from the bleeding edge becomes widespread knowledge people freak out over it. The general public in England thought that a train going over 30mp/h would kill all on board and explode in flames, for instance. The radio is the invention of the devil and will kill books. Cinema will radio. Tv will kill cinema. Internet will kill everything. The nukes will cause the atmosphere to ignite. Computers will kill us all due to a rounding error.

If you go back far enough, we have sketchy records from the transition from Oral to Literate societies where the Elders/Wise Men bitch about how writing stuff down means you'll never have to bother remembering anything.

If you go further forward, an industrial revolution scale advancement may very well happen every ten months, by 20something. Get used to change. Get used to development. The age wherein things changed very little during your life time have been over for decades. The TwenCen relics are mostly those who are experiencing it these days.

Knowledge is your friend. Ignore the tabloids. Read some scientific journals on it. Don't get caught up in the hysteria next time.

Also, this is a very minor example of "Future Shock". A better one would be showing your great grandparents an aeroplane, or 4chan.

I think he means when will they launch it from a cata. That's the first thing I do when a new object is implemented.

people feed off mistakes don't they?

    @beef,
    we already know nuclear weapons.
    next tier? its obvious.

possibly, but i fear we will also start blackholes in universes.
humans aren't supposed to be gods, and control the universe.

I guess it's a good thing I'm not human, then, my friend! :3

Black holes are hugely massive though. You might think that we could convert energy into mass through Einstein's famous equation using something like a nuke, but no, bombs are very uncontrolled in their output of energy and always cause more chaos than previous conditions. There's a natural limit toward humans being god-like, and that is that the universe doesn't give you things for free.

To be honest, I don't know why the LHC's small particles are interesting. It's very fundamental research. But I don't worry because it's concerned with small stuff. I have enough trouble studying one electron.

I think the better idea for black holes is to collect a huge amount of mass, say a very dense material, and toss it into something already highly massive, like a star. That might screw up the astrophysics for that star, but if you have advanced enough science to be able to take mass from somewhere else, possibly condense it, and move it to the star, then you probably have astrophysics all figured out, like how we understand wheels very well or like how you know how much damage your bomb would cause.

I'd be more worried about the bombs. MAD was a real thing that could've caused so much damage that a black hole popping up on our doorstep would only be some orders of magnitude worse.

You're thinking about the modern world from the viewpoint of a fearful Cro Magnon peering out at the loud noises and flashes in the sky. Really man, read more! Particularly hard sci fi. There is an absolute glut of information out there. Knowledge is power and all that.

Also if making black holes sounds impressive to you then a matrioshka brain hacking the planck substrate and running timing attacks on the space/time foam will blow your mind. And if you're still afraid of The Bomb, then imagine a universe where being concious/self aware isn't just useless, it's out right detrimental (great novel, but very heavy. The links to mull over that theory are at the bottom), which is a far scarier thought than large sections of the globe being rendered uninhabitable or humans being set back a few thousand years.

I understand that this is the Off Topic section, but bloody hell man. How does playing KAG qualify any of us to talk about this?

Now, if we're talking about hardon collisions, then sure, some of us know a thing or two. Fellere was genuinely disappointed when he realized you were talking about science.

    HADRON NOT HARDON
Also I assume you mean the Super Large hadron collider, I believe its under construction but I'd have to check my New Scientist magazine :D

Just let the scientists science. It does something wonderful about understanding the fundamentals of matter and the universe or something. I'm happy to let the eggheads who've studied a long time to poke the fabric of reality with a stick to see what happens.

you're not making any bloody sense tbh. Please read some physics before posting about such matters -.-

    1) since the black holes created on earth are created using relatively small masses, they can not cause enough destruction to even collapse the lab they are made in. They are very short lived afaik and you should not be concerned about them
    2) the mass-energy equivalence is used to calculate the energy freed in nuclear reactions, including what's going on in nuclear powerplants. Sadly we don't know how to turn any kind of mass into energy (yet)
    3) the main purpose of the experiments they're running in CERN is to find the Higg's boson, the particle that is assumed to be central in gravity. The electron and photon have already been found, but it's still unclear what gives matter its mass
    4) throwing stuff at stars is absolutely useless. It'll just melt since most stars are basically huge fusion reactors
    5) if you're worried about bombs, start building a bunker :huh?:

Yeah all the people freaking out in the news annoyed me because they don't understand just how fucking small scale the experiments are.

A 1-million tonne black hole is only the size of an atom. A 1-million tonne black hole is a pathetic wee thing that wont do bugger all, and they're not exactly flinging million tonne masses around in there are they?
