        Second Question: As far as groups go, people can apply by sending you a PM (or I guess they can post on your profile) they can not currently post in your thread unless they are part of the group. If you feel that their application is good and they follow the requirements, you can ask them to press the request to join group button. After that they can post in the group.

        There are many reasons. Personally I feel that open source works for manymanymany kinds of projects, but is not a great fit for games (game engines are different - OS is great for them!).
        I personally feel that many games that go open source lack the creative vision and drive that a single developer/dev team bring to a game. They get diluted by too many voices.
