If you know that each pixel is one block and each colour represents a type of block you are nearly there. Install paint.net and load one of Geti's maps up and look at it and understand it then create a new map, create a base bedrock layer on the bottom, then fill that up with dirt, etc..

To make a map, you download Paint.net, install it and then you open it. Enjoy.

If your using Paint.net you can go to KAG/Base/Maps and then open one of your maps and if you have your paint.net open you can right click and press edit so it makes it easy to pick the block of your choice and easy to know which is which.
P.S Using pencil helps alot with mirroring the ctf maps

wait what? you hand-draw both side of symetrical maps?
    1. Make one half of your symmetrical map (leave other half blank)
    2. Duplicate the layer
    3. Flip one of the layers horizontally
    4. merge the top layer back down
    5. Easy Peasy Mac-n-Cheesy
