Sup folks. I've noticed some differences in the way darkness in tunnels is distributed as illustrated in the following images:

Darkness has a left vs right skew to it. For example a tunnel built to the left will light up like the Las Vegas strip, while a tunnel built to the right goes perfectly dark after 4 tiles.
    1st Image: 3 tunnels left, 1 right w/ darkness.
2nd Image: 3 tunnels left, 1 right w/ shaft to show more of tunnel.

It appears that when digging left, it does not matter how far or deep the tunnel goes, it will still light up.

Digging a leftward tunnel can be obscured with darkness by obstructing the entrance (with doors for example) or by putting a rightward kink in the tunnel before digging left. The kink must travel at least 4 blocks to the right before digging down at the 5th and 6th blocks. Otherwise, the left tunnel still lights up.

This can result in significant differences in trap design for red vs blue team as shown below. Identical traps are built into simulated hillsides. You'll notice a distinct advantage for the red team.

So for now, I suggest folks make use of this quirk. For the future, I ask that the developers remove this difference.

I think it needs to be fixed rather then taken advantage of.

I wonder sometimes if the devs wrote the engine while spinning around on their computer chairs what with it being so dizzyingly lop sided. Not that I'm having a go cos it's pretty awesome given how long they've spent on it, I just don't understand how these odd little problems that make everything work clockwise come from...

Maybe it's supposed to be like that? I certainly hope not as that would give blue an advantage.

afaik this is because the game engine checks one side, then checks the other, same thing for when squeezing was like that, squeezing had been fixed before but since it checked the left-to-right side second it let you squeeze only in that direction.

I may be wrong, but that's the gist i got when shad explained it to me like 130~ builds ago.
