I'm using this program along with photoshop to make sprites, it's a free very good program, although my only problem with it is that it does not work with pen tablet, but it's good for creating outlines and setting up sprites, basic colours then taking it to photoshop to create blending and soft gradients (done by hand)

I highly recommend this program even to map makers because it has grid and tiling functions! Animators can also enjoy its function to draw in frames and preview and also onionskin.

I pick the colours from original sprites, palette panel on the left side automatically outputs colours when you load sprites.

    My brother!

I've been using it as a general-purpose image editor for a while now. To all you naysayers, I say that it is a good program for a multitude of purposes, and it's lightweight so it's worth a shot.

I wouldn't doubt he could be having problems with it, though. Because there's no actual distinction between Win8 and Win8RT (The tablet version), a lot of people have senseless compatibility errors because they have the latter. Also because they have Win8 in general.

I use Paint.Net, but it doesn't natively support animation, nor tilemaps. I think I'm going to check this Aesprite out.

Oh, it's open source too. Downloading.

  16. Open source pixel editing tool? Cool beans. Gotta download it.

Now all I need is to download some free time...

Please don't tell me you would ever use gradients on a sprite.

I don't, I use values and paint it by hand where I want it.

I revoke what I said earlier, this is nigh unusable. No zoom and a horrible GUI. The cursor it forces you to use is just appalling, as well as the 'font' it uses. Saves indexes in an inefficient way, and shitty transparency with gifs. I wouldn't touch this with my 16-foot dick.
