I've noticed that sometimes when I grab fish I can eat them to gain health, but other times they do nothing but wiggle around.
My current hypothesis is that the fish eventually die and turn into food, but I have no idea how long it takes or whether it's affected by being in inventory(under or above water)/on land.

So there are 3 experiments that need doing:
1)grab a fish and toss it out of the water, how long does it take to stop flopping?
2)grab a fish and keep swimming, does it ever stop flopping in your hands?
3)the same as #2, but get out of the water
4)grab a fish and stash it in your pockets, then get out of the water and wait. After a time passes, take it out and see if it's still flopping. If it IS, chuck it and grab a new fish, but wait longer this time, if it ISN'T, grab a new fish and don't wait as long. How long does it take?
5)#4, but stay in the water
6)after doing any of the above, wait half the time, then throw the fish back in the water for a second and restart. Does the fish "catch it's breath" and reset the air-drowning timer?

And we'll need multiple results for each of those to see if there's any randomness to it.
I'll be doing these experiments and posting my results in this thread.

Are you for real? Just stab or shoot the damn thing and stick it in yer gob. What in the world...

Going outside and making mud cakes would be a more productive use of your time, tbh.

I think the fish movement needs to be fixed. They never actually swim around. They all just spawn in the same spot, and then follow each other. When I try to kill one to eat it, I kill like 7 at the same time. They should actually be spread out and act like fish, not swim all ontop of each other.

Sounds like a whole lot of work. But if you get it done I'm really interested in what you find.

Actually not a whole lot of work as it turns out.
1)fish take approximately 15 seconds out of water to stop flopping.
2)no, either they never die, or it takes a REALLY long time
3)about 15 seconds until they go belly up
4-5)fish in your inventory are in perpetual stasis, neither living nor dead.
6)They DO NOT reset their drowning timers, or it takes a very long time for them to do so, repeatedly jumping in and out of the water with a fish will eventually kill it

Hey man, fish science is more important than you can imagine! Think of the potential lives saved by this vital research.

It's a lot easier to do this:
    1) stab or shoot the fish
    2) put it in your mouth or inventory

This will save more lives than holding a fish for 15 seconds...

    So you endorse collateral fish-murder?
It takes too long to stab each fish and collect it.
Much quicker to just fill your inventory and dump them all on the shore while you dove for more.

Not just slashing a whole school of fish at once to get max combo meter levels.
