Forum Game: War of Attrition. Game 3

Discussion in 'Spamcan' started by norill, Mar 9, 2014.

  1. Rules:
    The game is played in turns. Every turn players compete over a number resource sources. Each source has a certain value. Competing takes form of an all-pay secret auction. Players start with some funds, and every turn they send me a PM saying how much funds they are willing to pay to try to conquer each source. When the round ends everyone's funds are reduced by whatever they paid and each source is conquered by a player who placed the highest bid. Those players receive amount of funds equal to value of conquered source.

    Example:
    There are 3 players, each has $250 on start.
    And there are 3 sources: s1 worth $100, s2 worth $200 and s3 worth $300.
    Code:
    Alice bids $ 50 on s1, $ 0 on s2 and $ 50 on s3. Sum: $100
    Bob   bids $ 20 on s1, $10 on s2 and $100 on s3. Sum: $130
    Carol bids $120 on s1, $ 0 on s2 and $100 on s3. Sum: $220

    Source 1 was conquered by Carol.
    Source 2 was conquered by Bob.
    Source 3 was conquered by Bob and Carol (split reward).

    Alice balance after round 1: $250 - $100 bids + $  0 rewards = $150
    Bob   balance after round 1: $250 - $130 bids + $350 rewards = $470
    Carol balance after round 1: $250 - $220 bids + $250 rewards = $280
    Additional rules:
    • All sums must be natural numbers (more precisely, non-negative integers).
    • Players are free to communicate with each other, be it in this thread or anywhere else, collude, form alliances, back-stab your allies, etc.
    • Game ends when everyone doesnt give a fuck about it any more or when one player dominates everyone else (can conquer all sources with no risk).
    • Round duration is yet to be established, depending on number of players. (2-3 days in practise)
    • Players' bids may or may not be published after each round, it's up to you.
    • Players who don't send me a PM with bids before end of the round are penalised by reducing their funds by 30%
    • Any player can request current round to be extended for 1 day via pm. Longer extends are also possible if a player posts a request in the thread and more than 50% of players allow it.

    I'm in. What's keeping me from bidding 99 on the 100 source 249 on 250 and so on?

    One round later, someone else bids 251 on a 250, for a net loss of 1. Also you lose 249. Bad ideas are bad. It's called attrition for a reason. Unless you do nothing (and let everyone else go up) scores will be in a continuous downward spiral. I'm in, by the way.

    This is far more complex than I thought. I feel like I'm going to lose...

    Count me in. Haha. Ha.

  8. ok, we have 4 players:
    @UnnamedPlayer
    @Nivlac_13
    @Apronymous
    @Hella
    we can start already, or wait for more

    we also need to decide on round duration, and should i publish your bids after every round.

    as to the round duration i would suggest until everyone places their bets, but capped at 3 days.
    as to the bids publishing - idgaf, its entirely up to you

  9. Looks fun. I'm in.

    If this gets too big it will start off with a hectic mess.

    Gee, I'm quite fond off teabagging blenders!
    This sounds remotely pleasant.
    We don't need that information specifically, but I can't help but feel like this will be hell without some information (relative sizes of each bid, relative sizes of each net payoff, et cetera).
    That said I would be fine without information being available, I'd just hate you.

  11. well, you can always deduce that someone paid more than you if they conquer a source, or less than you if you conquer it. but that doesnt tell you much.

    but i think not revealing this information would put more importance to diplomacy

    It tells you even less with five players.

    *When you have enough information to recognize it as a lie.
    (ftfy)

    I'm not saying it isn't possible, I'm just saying that with a lot of players and little informed decision making there will be next to no strategic play until several people drop by chance.

  15. ok i interpret is as yes for publishing from you

    I feel like 48hrs time limit is better than 72hrs.
    Also, I think you should publish the info. And yes, 5 players is enough, pls start.
