Think about it... you are underground or you are inside of a castle and the enemy builder rushes in and builds bridges and ladders everywhere... it sucks to take everything down and before you know it another builder comes back and spams ladders everywhere too. A way to prevent this you ask? My expensive answer is to build spikes on the background walls. It does not damage anyone since it is not attached to an actual block and it effectively takes up the "space" for the spam bridges and such.

edit: this is a theoretical application and in game may or may not produce completely accurate results. It will in theory only produce a limited amount of delay.

It'd be nice in theory. But you have to consider teammates running in and immediately going "SPIKES BAD", then removing them before you get a chance to see it shine. In this case, even enemy builders could do the same thing (it's one simple click for them, after all- wouldn't really slow down spamming) and be rewarded with extra stone.

And you can bet this happens. Today I had an awesome defense with multiple levels of Acavado doors knocking down legions of enemy knights. It was ruined when an allied builder saw the spike, ran out through the door that 4 enemy knights were prowling around like hungry puppies searching for a teat, and removed the spike, ensuring that they could pass through the door and slaughter our builders and steal our outpost. But at least no one would hurt themselves on a spike, right?

Someone else ended up filling my entire now-defunct trap cavern with stone blocks, making a Warhol-esque wall 8 blocks thick. Luckily by that time we were ahead enough stock to ensure victory, but it just made me weep for the missed potential.

Zuboki: Sadly your comment is all too true, this method would only be remotely viable with the "infinite" resources allowed in the build phase. It completely consumes resources and ultimately wastes time, nonetheless the idea having a "cheap" block be able to disallow the building of a bridge or ladder creates an interesting scenario. This theoretical architectural application should hopefully be expanded upon somehow in the future, sadly I am too tired to effectively think of a way to expand this theory based upon idea alone (I do not have access to KAG itself... my MAC doesn't support it.)

I haven't bothered trying this for just that reason. If there was a Rules to KAG it would include "#5. All unattended spikes will be removed because spikes are scary." Looking for a practical application, maybe, above deep spike traps. You might even space the spikes efficiently in a pattern that purposely leaves holes, a checkered pattern, for enemy builders to try to fill. Every team bridge they build is automatically porcupined and turned into a trap for you. So in the case of a usual rush of knights with a builder in tow, the builder will injure all the teammates that excitedly jump on what's being built. Cautious, they'll build in slow motion. And don't you lose coins breaking spikes? The enemy is inevitably going to be killed if they're forced to stand still for a long time in front of your defenses and over a spike pit.

Sounds rather, exhaustive and just gives the enemy builders lots of stone if they want to try running to the front and grabbing it (when there are no archers around with a proper run), allowing them to set up a lot of their own reinforcements rushing back a bit.

I've actually found spikes on background tile to be a great way to store stone in the past, kinda preferred workshops as they came out although you don't get 10 per hit, you get 8, you also get the 10 wood, so it depends. Spikes for cata ammo, workshops otherwise.
