[514] Reintroducing: Trench & Bunkers

Discussion in 'Builder' started by Kovett, Oct 4, 2012.

  1. Good day there, fellow KAG players! Soulrealm, here with an idea and reintroduction to trench warfare and bunkers. As many of you prefer Towers or Bunkers, here are some idea that will allow Bunkers and Trenches to be reintroduced into this game. I shall present to you the Simple Bunker Structure.

    *************************************************
    Through the reintroduction of Bunkers (especially useful in my upcoming SIEGE CTF), you can stay safe from bombs, arrows and rocks alike, and create waypoints and stations for fellow team members.

    As you know already, KAG CTF mainly consists of Tower Vs Tower, mainly one attacking side and one defending side. The reintroduce of Bunkers can help you push your team forward, closer and closer towards the enemy tower and thus the enemy flag.

    *************************************************

    Firstly, we come up with the question: What is a bunker?

    The Google definition of a bunker is a reinforced underground shelter, typically for use in wartime.

    Let me rephrase for the game: In KAG a bunker is a reinforced underground structure, used to keep inhabitants safe from enemy assault.

    Now, here we come to the construction of a bunker. A bunker must be strong and stable, able to resist enemy attack for long periods of time.

    *************************************************
    TRENCHES

    We all know that, all Towers are weak in some way, either it is weak to enemy catapult fire, bombs or builders, it is weaker in some kind of way.

    Here is a small basic trench. It can be dug by anyone and can be done with a shield, right in the middle of a battlefield.

    We can upgrade that into a bunker.

    *************************************************
    BUNKERS

    [IMG]

    Bunkers, we can see are quite resilient to bombs, easy to fix, low on resources and can have compartments shut off. See below.

    Bunkers, can be further expanded to include workshops and more entrances.

    [IMG]

    While waiting for enemy knights to stop roaming around above you, you can create spike traps to create a more dangerous environment for the enemy and to hinder enemy infiltration.

    [IMG]

    Bunkers have infinite expansion.

    [IMG]

    Safe gathering of resources.

    [IMG] [IMG]

    And can even collapse enemy towers.

    [IMG]

    And when enemies infiltrate...

    [IMG]

    *************************************************
    CATAPULT BUNKERS

    Why use catapult bunkers? Catapult bunkers have a specific line of fire. They are very deadly for knocking out enemies on the ground and require No Aim. And knights can be used to protect from accurate archer fire.

    [IMG]

    The above image shows the catapult bunker, in addition to the highlighted red area of fire at 'Orange' to 'Red' power for any catapult.
    Keep in mind that catapults inside catapult bunkers are only able to fire rocks and bombs.

    Catapult bunkers can be enhanced to become part of a network of bunkers.
    Catapult bunkers can be reinforced to decrease bomb damage.

    [IMG]

    However Reinforced Catapult Bunkers are unable to fire bombs (correct me if I'm wrong).

    [IMG]

    To place the catapult inside a Reinforced Catapult Bunker, simply position yourself on the lower ladder (with doors open) and throw your catapult towards the ground forwards. The extra chamber was created in case of an bombs rolling inside the Bunker.

    *************************************************
    BUNKER = TOWER BASE

    Keep in mind that all bunkers can be enhanced into the base of a tower. If you can't see that already, I suggest you stare at the screen as hard as you can for the next 24 hours.

    *************************************************

    Great guide Soul! I never fully knew the offensive and defensive potential of a bunker, now I know how useful they are.

    Looks functional, useful, and absolutely brilliant in general. I'm going to be doing this a heck of a lot more often.

    The only bunker I ever use is this:

    :dirt::castle_wall::door::door::castle_wall::castle_wall: :dirt:
    :dirt::door:[IMG] [IMG] [IMG][IMG] :dirt:
    :dirt::castle_wall::quarters::quarters::quarters::castle_wall: :dirt:
    :dirt::castle_wall::quarters::quarters::quarters::castle_wall: [IMG]
    :dirt::castle_wall::castle_wall::castle_wall::castle_wall::castle_wall: :dirt:

    I generally place it very close to the main fighting area of the game. It is very use full for a quick heal and fairly durable.

    Notes:
    The WS is a quarters, if you don't already know.

    Also this a great guide. Thumbs up!

    This is good. Nobody has made such a detailed guide on bunkers as preferred to towers before. :)

    However, I consider bunkers only as extensions of structures or as offensive tools. The best advantage to an underground bunker is protection from arrows and (especially) catapult fire. This is great, but I don't think you can make a base solely out of bunkers. You will definitely still need structures above the surface to impede enemy advancement (which you mentioned, but could do to expand on.) Otherwise, your enemies will just walk right over your bunker.:p

    If I were a builder facing a team using bunkers, I would (try to) counter by blocking all the exits and vantage points with stone. Another problem with underground bases is that they take a long time to dig out and build, as compared to setting towers-oriented bases.

    Catapult bunkers are, of course, as OP and stupidly effective as ever (although I have yet to see one in-game.) I also think it's funny how you added the About section in the end to make it all official. ;)

    I think there is a place for bunkers if you have the time to dig them. Personally I'm anti-digging so I rarely bother with subterranean structures. I think the smaller bunkers and terrestrial catapult nests are nice because they afford you nice protection in relation to the amount of effort you put in to digging them, but I'm not so sure the larger bunkers provide a substantial amount of extra protection in relation to the time and resources spent making them.

    Irritating, nasty builders (Sp. Tektonus Horribilis Guroii) will stone up the entrances of bunker bases to both deny entry and exit to the bunkers. If the enemy team manages to push past your bunkers and stone them up, then you've wasted a great deal of time digging them out.

    One of my biggest problems with bunker bases is that while they take a substantial amount of time to build, they provide no stopping power or restriction of access like a tower does. I think one of the most important parts about the mechanics associated with building is the idea of access. Builders are a class which are simultaneously a lubricant and an adhesive. That is to say that they are exceptionally powerful at manipulating the battlefield, and by extension, access on the battlefield. Laddering up enemy structures allows access and mobility for your team. Stoning up doors or building nasty offensive overhangs restricts enemy access. This is an incredibly powerful point that most builders forget. I try to base the way I play builder around the idea of access. I'll be talking more about this in a new guide I am making on Advanced Building and the Psychology of Building. I'm rambling really, but what I am trying to get at is the following: I simply believe that in most cases if substantial time and resources are to be invested in one particular structure, then that structure should provide stopping power or restriction of access to the enemy team. That's just how I see it though.

    I'm not attacking your guide, I think it's nice and informative. I just have a preference for above ground structures. The cata nests and trenches get a +1 from me though.

    If anybody wants some additional information or background to catapult bunkers, I reccomend checking out THIS thread. As outlined in one of the posts in the link I just provided, there exists a design for a catapult nest that is completely protected from arrow fire. I think I still have a couple of pictures of such a structure on my external hard-drive. I'd be happy to post it here if it isn't considered cheating or something like that. Or if it even still works. I'm also assuming it wouldn't destroy the metagame. I'm not ready for a catapult-centric metagame.

    So yeah. Cool guide yo.

    EDIT to Soulrealm:
    Why the hostility? The main reason most players read a guide is to extract information from it. If they don't know much about bunkers or building in general then what I posted would be helpful. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you're just assuming that the vast majority of KAG players have a strong knowledge of building. Maybe this is true, but there will always be people who need a little help or some information regarding building you know? Many people assume that nobody is nooby enough to build door hallways anymore, yet I see them in almost every large CTF game I am in. I don't think it is wise to make assumptions like that.

    I stand by my statement that your guide is good and that it contains useful content. That said, I don't talk down to people so it only follows that I would expect the same courtesy of people who talk to me. I apologise if I have misunderstood you. Tone is hard to detect across the internet, but that is certainly how you came off.

  9. Well, if you don't realise, you are just saying 'what people should already know'. And which most of them do. Yes, you are 'illuminating' it, but those that are even able to read this, should know when and why to use bunkers.

    If I didn't state before: bunkers will be especially useful in my upcoming SIEGE (Custom CTF) Server.
    Bunkers are also especially useful in turtling and grinding maps, where there is a 'No Man's Land'.

    If you are even reading this, you should already know everything I've stated in this post, as well as the first sections of Guro's post.

    And I'd appreciate it if you take irrelevance away from this thread.
