How soon could we get a rating system tied in with accounts?

I finally got to play for more than 5 minutes tonight after weeks of barely being able to touch a game.. 2 hours into playing on Euro Server, I get kicked with the usual message: "kick *name* well known griefer*.

I'm thinking if we could have a rating system where server operators or a chosen few in the community who play regularly and can be trusted - give you a positive or negative mark simply when they see you and can see that you are either playing or griefing. So if you're playing and obviously building or fighting, they give you a positive tick in game similar to say how the griefer tick marking works. Maybe have it something like a box that shows up next to their ingame indicator name (not name on the score table). They see someone playing, click on the box next to their name and a little un-obstructing pop up somewhere at the top of the screen shows up where they can quickly hit a "+" or "-" button. Eventually as you play and never grief, your rating gets higher and higher. When a votekick pops up with your name on it, but you have a high positive rating, people might think twice before kicking. Perhaps, if there are no negative ticks and you have say over 30 positive (which could take weeks) the kick doesn't pass for just the first time or the kick gets stalled - the player can type up a defence and a second vote is conducted. The player could get frozen in place until the second vote passes. I wouldn't mind a 1 or 2 minute inconvenience of not being able to play to being tossed out of a server for a while.

Fresh accounts would have to wait 1 week before they could get a rating. This is so that griefers who make new accounts all the time can't abuse this system easily.

The rating could also be tied in with the age of the account PLUS number of games that account has played. A griefer who gets his account banned will have no choice but to start with a fresh account and so can never get a high rating. My account is one of the first accounts, I'd have a good rating. Better if I played more. New players would obviously have low ratings at first too, but after perhaps a month or 2 could achieve a high rating and worry less about getting kicked.

I know the anti-griefing measures and ratings or account system has been discussed to death, but I hope I have a few good points that might end up being possibilities here.

I saw you get kicked, that sucks dude

I think it would have to be an automatic system though, not controlled by users because then that could be abused somehow. I imagine a rank assigned to each player account.

Basically it would be like leveling up. The ranks would go:

    (-1. Dishonorable Discharge)
    0. Trainee
    1. Private
    2. Corporal
    3. Sergeant
    4. Lieutenant
    5. Captain
    6. Major
    7. General

Each rank would require points to achieve. The points required increasing for each successive rank.

So to achieve points you'd do things like get kills or build structures. No one gets voting abilities until they've reached at least Sergeant (you could still TAB-kick though). Also, the server admin can decide a minimum rank to play, say, corporal.

Getting TAB-kicked or voted out would demote you each time until your points go negative and you get a DD (dishonorable discharge) and your account is closed permanently.

I think the easiest way to make a rating system self balancing is to incur a cost for abusable actions - but upvotes and downvotes. Essentially, this means that while votes still come from no-where, they come forth at a slower rate.

Goddamn I can't be bothered presenting that system again, there's a thread about it here.

Either way I kind of like the various gameplay-specific things you've outlined here. This would make delay-on-kick more feasible.

Oh and the chevron icons for each rank beside each person's name would help everyone see whos at what rank. Like, if you saw somewhat at the General rank, you'd all rally behind him, taking orders etc.

I think we should think up a new ranking system.

    Lupe Fiasco
    Nas
    Biggie
    Tupac
    Jay-Z
    Kanye West
Eminem (During the SSLP and MMLP)
    T.I.
    Dr.Dre
    Snoop Dogg

In order from lowest to highest rank. People that get the Snoop rank get three of these over their playermodel

As long as the Snoop rank is still the best rank

Guys, if we have a rating system that goes by rank, it WON'T be by "retards attempting poetry" sorry. :P

Yeah, I know this is a pain in the ass, but I'm glad you like the ideas.

Hey, maybe a mod would let you change the rank images to follow this! How is Eminem the 7th rank though? He's garbage. Kanye should be higher than him :/ Taylor Swift should be the highest.

The thing is ranks shouldn't be in small discrete levels like that, they should just be indicative of how well liked and good at the game someone is. I think it'd be better to have a placement system, 1st 2nd 3rd ... 4021st etc. Being able to say "I'm in the top 100 players!" is more rewarding I think than getting labelled a major or snoop dogg or whatever.

Ranks ARE "indicative of how well liked and good at the game someone is." If you do well, you get promoted, if you don't you get demoted. You wouldn't get to Sergeant by being a dickhead for example.

If you get to General, you would be in the "top 100 players" ..or more like top 10 if it's harder to reach.

I suppose numbers would work just as well, it just doesn't fit with the military theme of the game.

How about we just scrap that idea all together and bring in some legends of rock?

(I can only list three off the top of my head.)

Ronnie James Dio (Being the best of course)
    Jimmy 'The Rev' Sullivan
    Meatloaf

@willy: thing is there'll likely be non-combative game modes in the future and themed ranks won't fit there. I don't see much wrong with a number, it's more informative.

Re: musical ranks of any sort - meh, not feeling it. Just seems like a gimmick.

I suggest ranks as in world of warcraft, as they match in the medieval game and are mostely epic.

dunno all in english so i post just a few :

    Lieutenant
    Marshall
    Field Marshall
    Grand Marshall
Prince Arthur ",.," (not from wow :P)

musicians are pretty bad idea btw, since like everybody has a other sound style.

Pretty sure the musicians suggestion was a joke.

I like your name alternatives. Perhaps the 2nd highest rank, before becoming Prince Arthur, would be Knight of the Round Table.

I imagine members of the Knight of the Round Table would be only the top 30 performers of the game and the Prince Arthur group would be the top 10.

@Geti, non-combatants in the military still hold military titles, like engineers, doctors, etc. so even in a non-combative game mode, the titles would still be appropriate.

Maybe instead of "Prince Arthur," "Prince of Camelot" would make more sense.
