How to build a tower in 7 easy steps.

(OK now that build 80 came out I have to redesign the tower, ladder spam is no longer useful cause the free background wall exploit was fixed, etc...)

Here's how to build a tower that is cheap, strong and easy to defend.

    1)

Find a good spot right next to bedrock, so the enemy cannot dig a tunnel below your tower.
Do not build directly on top of bedrock because the splinters it projects when destroyed by bombs are very dangerous.

    2)

Build an 8 tile high wall, with a 2 or 3 tiles thick base. Build ladder next to it to climb and for protection against bombs.

    3)

This is how you start building the archer's nest. It has:
-2 tile high wall to protect the archer and allow him to jump-shoot
-murder hole looking down, so the archer can shoot at people right besides the wall
-a builder can throw rocks by placing them right below the isolated stone block.

    4)

Build a little roof and reinforce your tower with ladder.
Ladders are cheap and they make your tower bombproof.

At this point it is relatively safe to build an outpost nearby, just not too close to the tower.

    5)

Time to make a thicker wall. It is much better to separate wall layers by 1 tile, this way attackers are always vulnerable to archers firing from the top of the walls.
Build a roof to protect the support ladder and background walls from catapult fire.
Since an outpost is nearby go crazy with ladder, it's free and adds support to your tower.
(also there's a bug that allows you to build background wall without using any stone)

    6)

Of course your teammates need doors to go back to the outpost.
Never build the doors at ground level, build them higher so people have to jump to reach them, this way they are harder to destroy.
The spikes are optional since they're not very useful... Dont worry, the spikes on the door cant hurt your teammates!

    7)

You can add a catapult on the roof of the tower,
build it exactly like on the picture and it will be very well protected.

I personally just start with a 4x8 wall right off the bat because it gives you a lot of time to play around with the rest of the tower.

4x8 walls, *"X"x3 ceiling, floors if I'm not on top of bedrock.

My towers aren't the prettiest, but they're big, intimidating, and secure. That gets the point across.

*"X" being whatever you feel like

ladders slow down too much, leave an empty tile in between two ladders

Thank you, found several useful moments.
However I would advise replacing sand with stone blocks under floor instead of waisting so much time on ladders and back walls.

Placing ladders and background wall is super fast and free if there's an outpost nearby.
It makes your tower much stronger and almost impossible to collapse.

A tower without proper support will collapse with just a couple bombs.

I think a wall thicker than 2 tiles is a waste. Once the enemy makes a hole you cannot hit them anymore, then they can safely make a tunnel through your tower no matter how thick it is.

That is why you should separate your wall layers, leaving 1 tile in beetween for arrows to pass.

    Cool.

The door ladder looks awesome! I'll give it a try.
The balcony is useuful too, in this tower the archer's nest works like a balcony.
The spikes on the sides of the pit only kill you if you're pressing left or right keys, otherwise you are unharmed.

I really like the way you build the tower, the one tile separation between columns seems better than a thick expensive wall. The rock throw space is also very nice. Thumbs up!

Cool tower design and very functional in many ways, and pics are always nice. A tower like this with a few good players (one of each class or more) to guard it would be extremely hard to get thru (probably impossible unless you are well outnumbered).

I see several weaknesses of this tower. The archer port is too high; gives the tower a big blindspot. Partially fixed by the hole above the door, but that hole is a bigger liability than it is and advantage. The fact that there's ladders everywhere slows everyone inside, making those open holes easy target for enemies. In fact bombs could be thrown in at the front quite easily.

The archer port itself is also a liability, offering a perfect port for enemy arrows to make their way into the main area. Again, the ladders will slow down defenders, making them even weaker to arrow spam. Put a wall behind the port to make an archer cubicle.

That lip above the archer port is very good. You could even extend it another tile depending on the situation but one tile is a very solid choice.

Doors you need to jump into won't let laggy people in, the doors don't open in time. I'm not a big fan of spikes in general but the spikes on the doors thing is neat.

I'd also make it easier to reach the catapult.

A knight could shield down into the spike hole and take no damage and then begin to burrow under. An archer might be able to hit him, but I'm not entirely sure as the hole isn't directly in front of the wall. The holes between the doors is a good idea, but archer could use it to spam up and lock down the upstairs easily. Add doors at the top to minimize this.

Another geographical consideration would be having trees in front of the tower for protection against ladders, or behind for an easy source of ammunition.

Again, as vig mentioned the ladder spam slows everyone down and if you're going to ladder spam, at least have some sections of half coverage to allow speed.

Otherwise not bad. A little too elaborate for my tastes but otherwise pretty good. Miles better than the usual crap the minecraft players build.

Quite cheap archer tower, although a ladder pile is even cheaper :P

Trap is good, but it needs a bit larger scale.

Start with doors so the flow of troops can keep moving and some background walls like a blueprint of where you are planning to build which will let your team know you are going to construct something there then add some archer slots to fend off any attackers that might come by, while that's going on you can continue mining/building without too much worry of a destroyed castle at least until the greifers wake up from their naps.

Hi guys, here's a new tower design for build 80, and with improvements suggested in this thread:

-I added door-ladder cause its so awesome, and cheap.
-first wall is 2 tiles thick.
-Added walls to make an "archer cubicle" , and made sure there are no blindspots.
-no more ladder spam because exploit was fixed in build 80.
-The archer cubicle is filled with ladder cause it makes it possible to go from shooting through the bottom hole to the top window, and also because it makes it easier to use 1 Kill shots.
    -easy roof access.

Still, the effectiveness of the tower depends on its position. You have to make sure tunneling is not possible or it'll be useless. But remember not to build your background wall on bedrock or it will be completely destroyed with the first bomb.

Cant wait for the rock throwing thingie!

fucking beautiful. I think its basically perfect except I dunno how archery is going to change so the archer port will need to be adjusted around that.

    Wow. That's a fantastic design.

...I really need to get this design showcase site up and running.
