Every single one of them absolutely hated it.

They loved the concept to death, so they were extremely excited to play when I told them about it. Once they got in, however, they all had the exact same complaint: Bombs EVERYWHERE. I noticed this as well, never really hating it, but none of them could get past it.

They didn't hear this from someone else either, they all joined and came to this conclusion separately, without hearing about the game from anyone but me until they actually played it.

Is there anything in 1.0 that might fix this? I don't think I can count on server operators to make bombs more expensive.

I don't think it is the bombs themselves that bother them, but rather the huge amount of them being tossed around.

It's not just a problem of noobiness. I've probably played the most KAG out of anyone ever (admittedly a dubious accomplishment) and I've noticed that bombs have consistently proven to be problematic for game balance and fun. This is true across pretty much every common game mode and format; even in clan matches with top level players and more expensive bombs, bomb spam is a major problem.

I won't reiterate my specific complaints here as most people get awfully upset at bomb balance talk, but I just wanted you to know that there are a number of people who share this view. While there is little that can be done now this issue has been brought up with the devs and is being addressed in the scripting build. Until then there are a few things your friends can do.

Like Mellian said, being knight and shielding is the only real effective defence against bombs besides staying several screens away. It can be a really questionable effort when lag is involved, but if your connection is good and you're experienced at predicting trajectories and explosion timings it's a fairly reliable defense.

However if you don't want to play that one specific class there are a few other things you can do as well. As a builder at full health you can sometimes manage to dodge bombs. Whenever I play builder I start running away as soon as I hear the sound of one being lit. One thing that can help is to start running towards the thrower once they loose their bomb. They will often be adjusting for your retreat and this can majorly throw them off. Enemies can quickly learn to account for this too and it hardly ever works at close range. If you succeed and reach the edge of the blast radius you may live with a smidgen of health.

Archers can do the above as well, however they have a much rougher time of it due to reduced health and being slowed down on trees all the time. I don't really play archer so I don't really know, but I'm theorykagging that your best bet is to time a fully charged shot so that it hits them or their shield just before they would want to throw it, so that the bomb explodes in their hand or short of their target. For the most part archers are basically free to bombs unless you decide not to have fun and just stay way in the backfield.

Get them to go on the less choc-a-block servers, there's less bombs, less people and its less confusing for new players. It can be a bit overwhelming to join a busy server as a nub, everyone seems to know what they are doing when you don't and no-one can spare a minute to explain mechanics of the game.
