Paid version?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by D'Nightingale, Jun 30, 2011.

  1. I've just discovered this game and I have to say the potential for it is amazing, specially with the constant updates I see.

But as any project of this kind I'm sure the devs want to make a profit from it, as they should.

My question is rather simple, how will the game change as to make a profit?, will it become pay to play?, will it stay free to play but paying players get advantages in gameplay or maybe additional options?

People who pay should never ever ever ever ever ever ever, under any circumstances, have gameplay advantages over free users (that the free users can't obtain themselves somehow).
And based on what I've seen I don't think these devs would ever do that.

Take a look at the account and payment setup for Soldat, I'm guessing it'll be similar.
Still a long way away from that though.

Yeah I don't expect there to be gameplay advantages.
One thing that there will almost certainly be is premium-only servers - which I cannot wait for.
That'll be an end to griefing, hopefully.

You can already donate and get a map editor as a bonus. (I think.)

if game will become paid game, it will be simply hacked and many pirate servers will start. i think its definitively too early to consider these questions. game is bugged hardly and still unbalanced alpha.

We're actually planning something interesting here.
Obviously the editor, premium-only servers etc, that's a given, but we're looking to give paid users access to a much larger and more complicated game mode - essentially expanded CTF with more RTS elements. We figure we don't have to be as cautious with complicated mechanics when dealing with paid users as they're making more of a commitment to playing than free users.

Essentially, we want the paid version to be what we'd make KAG into if we were just making the games for us to play rather than making sure that it's accessible.

@struna: any popular paid game gets hacked. Minecraft has been released for free on many unscrupulous websites but they've also got a larger, dedicated, paying player-base (and shedloads of capital for their troubles). We're certainly going to sort out bugs and balancing of the free CTF mode first (and probably release INF and TDM iterations of that content as well) but we're definitely thinking about a paid version.

@Geti Minecraft started to be a payable game after alpha testing and fixing major bugs, and after obtain enough base of players. Minecraft is quite bigger 3D project, stolen from previous project Infiniminer, popular enough through the Internet.
KAG is almost uknkown. I just dont think that making it payable will increase popularity of this game. I think that some micro-charges should be fine idea, but dont make it too fast. In other way you can have peoblems to find enough people who will pay a penny for it.
This is just my opinion and fears about. there's no rush i think, he is a bad adviser.

You don't understand. Free version will still be free after paid is released, and paid version will add just ability to play on servers with a bit more complicated gamemode (or on servers without griefers, simply...). So nothing changes for free users. They don't need to pirate the paid version.

Ha, this was my exact reaction too.

@Geti: Quite frankly, the second you get the account system going I'll buy a premium account.
I don't need to have 'premium-only' content right now, I trust you guys to deliver on your commitments.
Being able to go on premium-only servers with the game as it is would be all the incentive I need.

  12. I have to say I'm not too convinced by this model.

The first problem I see is spliting the paying and the non paying community, because if I'm paying for this premium game mode to be honest I'm gonna be expecting to see at least one 20+ player server with decent ping most of the times I want to play, that would mean at the very least two servers like that (one in the US and another one in Europe) to be up and active most of the time. That is going to need a huge player base, at least compared to the current one, otherwise paying players might get bored or just play the free part of the game just because it's far more active, thus creating a vicious cycle.

The second problem I see is that premium only content, specially when is basically a rather different (if not plain improved) way to play the game doesn't look so good to the average player. For me, the best free to play games use a model where almost all content in the game is aviable to all players, but those who pay get some sort of benefit or advantage, this guarantees those paying players will have a big player base to play with while actually getting something for their money.

The question, of course, is where do you draw the line?, give them too much of an advantage and it might piss off free players, don't give them enough and there won't be too much of an incentive to pay.

The advantage I see in this game, is that the individual player almost all of the time makes little to non difference in the outcome of the match, the quality of team play is far more important. So, would a Knight with more health, an archer with higher damage or a builder that mines faster (just to put some examples) imbalance a match?, no way, specially if a system is put in place where the number of paying players on each team is kept balanced, the impact on the match therefore should be close to none in most matches.

So then you have a system where the players who pay get a tangible advantage, which is what many want, without butchering the quality of the game for the free playes.

Now, I'm just some random dude so I'm not in any way trying to tell you what to do with your game x )... Just sharing thoughts based on my experience with this kind of games.

This game is really fun as it is, and if it's potential is fullfilled it will me amazing, totally worth 10 or even 20 bucks. Right now I lack the means to do electronic payments, but if that changes when the game gets oficially released I will surely buy it.

I really don't think they intend to add features for premium players that will apply on free servers.
So premium players will not be at an advantage in games with free players - they will just have access to the new features in the premium servers.

this site's forum has 259 users. minecraft had thousands of users when they started taking cash from it. most players i saw online in server's lobby was ca ~70, and it was really max.
even if half of this players will buy premium account, it will be nothing still.
of course u can try, its your game and your decisions. Just please - dont kill this game too early.

We're not planning on killing our own game and it's pretty insulting to suggest that we would, Struna.

We're going to need to wait for a larger player base before we split the servers "officially" but we'll likely allow a server flag to make the server only show up in the premium client and require account validation before logging in once there's enough people for that to be worthwhile (or immediately after the accounts system is working if there's demand, hint hint)

We don't intend on giving players a gameplay advantage at all - as well as that seems to sell (Nexon, looking at you) it ruins the spirit of competitive play - why should you start playing a free game if the paid players have an edge over you.

Offering the option to give your player a fancy haircut or maybe even clothing changes is an option for playing in free modes (so the paid players still feel special without actually being given a gameplay boost) but really we want to make a game that people will want to pay money to get in on - a proper PvP fortress simulator.

I'm just gonna go on record saying I'll throw money at you guys as soon as the account system is up and there's a server flag for premium-only.

There's not enough players yet to start seriously charging for anything in the game. I think there needs to be at least 10x the player base.

    insulting?
ekhm, im sorry Sir, but nobody suggested, that you want to kill your own game. im just telling you in response to topic, that making game payable in current condition will stop new player from getting strongly addicted. and it WOULD kill the whole idea.
from the other hand, i think that only one option should be added on premium servers, which should make buying accounts really sensibly - some anti-griefer system + moderators. trust me - its the mainest problem actually.
