Wiki spam accounts

    Hey there,

    while editing some stuff in the Wiki, I noticed that there are dozens of automated spam accounts being created daily, each of them posting spam with links on their own user pages. Right now when signing up there is no check for human at all and you don't even need a valid email address. I think it would be a good idea to have at least one of either CAPTCHA or a valid email address required for signup. I reckon it would stop the spam immediately.

    I was also wondering if someone could help me out by capitalizing my user name here.

    I completely agree, this has been happening for at least a few months! It makes it difficult to keep track of changes and also suggests there is no moderation, as if it the wiki was abandoned. Neither is good to encourage new contributors.

    jrgp and I will look into adding some kind of human verification to the wiki. It is a very important resource which needs to be protected.

    I have taken care of this. The wiki now requires an account with e-mail activation to edit (which should be perfectly fine - anyone who really has something of value to contribute shouldn't mind being registered on there) and required a captcha (recaptcha) for registration.

    This should be the end of the spam issue on the wiki, so feel free to clean up any existing spam you see - it won't come back.

    I've fixed recaptcha (we reverted this vhost to php 5.2 to avoid the php bug that the recaptcha extension hits on in 5.3)
