Nothing is taken up space because space is nothing. Except all the stars, planets and black holes, and stuff.

but as said nothing is taking up space so something that takes up space is in some way something

It is made of something, if it wasn't it wouldn't be there. But you have too go in-depth to understand.

There are mainly no particles in 'space' so it's like a big vacuum, but there are 'SOME' particles, which are made of mainly hydrogen and helium, which form a plasma called the Intergalactic Medium. A plasma is where these particles have energy and are ionized, so behave very differently to when they are just a gas.

But Scientist believe (and as do I), 'space' is made of something called 'dark matter', they mainly think this because you cannot see it. But they believe 84% of space is Dark Matter, the other 16% would be what i said before.. this 'Intergalactic Medium'.
