    Nothing is taken up space because space is nothing. Except all the stars, planets and black holes, and stuff.

    There are mainly no particles in 'space' so it's like a big vacuum, but there are 'SOME' particles, which are made of mainly hydrogen and helium, which form a plasma called the Intergalactic Medium. A plasma is where these particles have energy and are ionized, so behave very differently to when they are just a gas.

    But Scientist believe (and as do I), 'space' is made of something called 'dark matter', they mainly think this because you cannot see it. But they believe 84% of space is Dark Matter, the other 16% would be what i said before.. this 'Intergalactic Medium'.
