Originally it was going to be speck as a play on the ships being built out of detritus (while also sounding like wreck), but I put spec to reference to whole design highly detailed things that take function from form.

Yup; usually not with names though. I feel names should be simple, punchy, and meaningful where possible; a wordy name is both confusing and rarely memorable.
