    the instrument "piano" is actually short for pianoforte. The modern day piano. I can only assume you're abbreviating "fortepiano" which is a very early version of the piano. It had a much quieter sound, and didn't sustain notes as well as a pianoforte because it used thinner strings.

    Haha. I knew all of that.

    The pianoforte is called such because of it's ability to be both loud and quiet/soft.

    And whenever I play the piano, it always comes out on the forte side rather then the piano side... obscure joke... sorry. :p
