Perhaps it wasn't some random new guy but someone playing under a different account. A lot of the people that play this game seriously have alternate accounts.

Or it's some guy who has come back after a year or two and is still good at the game.

This game is like riding a bicycle. One never forgets. There's times that i leave this game for months on end and when i return to it, its almost like i never left it.

I sometimes even feel better after I go on a break.
