Please explain how letting them slash you first means you win
I definitely can't see how letting Gurin get 2 hearts of damage on me is an advantage

When they slash first, You need to backstep it and lash out with your own strike, gaining the upper hand in combat.

 

I agree with what Gurin says, You need to be unpredictable varying it up ever so often to gain the upper hand, Sometimes though, slashing first does give the upper-hand in combat. For instance, When your enemy is too close to back-step your attack, Slash spam him, If your opponent is experienced he will definitely block the incoming slashes while moving backwards. Then when the distance between your opponent is enough, He'll retaliate with his own slash and catch you off guard.

This is what some of the more experienced players do, Some may even shield run away from you and quickly strike back.
Never be reckless in combat but be wary.

I thought you meant allowing them to actually slash and damage you, not letting them slash first, but back step it
