Alright, that could work, put what itme would be teh rope? And if there is no item, they why can't we use rope as an item to clib stuff in the game other then just attach it to an arrow.

Plus wouldn't rope + fire = burning rope?

You're not going to climb anything with a bit of string and there are all kinds of fire-retardant liquids: if the archer has access to whatever he dips the arrow in to keep it burning he has access to some water to soak his string.

Here's another way it could work: while the archer charges his fire arrow, he can press right click at any time to set a delay on the fire unattaching. If he never right clicks, the fire stays on the arrow; if he right clicks 2 seconds after he starts charging, then the fire would unattach from the arrow 2 seconds after the arrow is released. It would be significantly less fun than clicking while the arrow is flying, though

There are tons of ways to keep a fire arrow from being a boring mechanical clone of a normal arrow. It takes minimal creativity and time to spew these out, so I hope the final archer F won't be a disappointment.

Do you have any idea how unintuitive that mechanic would be? It'd increase the skill ceiling because it'd make successfully dropping fire on someone/something pretty goddamn impossible - the amount of charge an archer has is variable with time and the arrow moves through the air with drag. Trying to find the point in time to make the fire drop off the arrow to land in the correct spot would be the equivalent of mentally solving some first order differential equation just for the drop point! If the fire projectile falls at an angle and nonlinearly then there's even more to consider in getting the fire where you want it to go.
I like interesting weapons like that, but not as a core mechanic - perhaps later in the full version when we have many classes we can have an archer with compound ammunition, ok?

Anyway, yes, fire is confirmed, as are fire arrows for archers.
Yes, units will use the F menu to select their mode of attack - I suggested using it to select knight attacking abilities at one point but that seemed unfavourable to a lot of people. For archers, it'll be ammo select.

Yes, quite a few people find the archer class boring ("you just kill stuff and climb trees"), just as many people find the builder class boring ("you just build shit") and the knight class boring ("once you're out of bombs it's just slashing and shielding").

Archers are the most mobile class in the game - some people enjoy that freedom and the ability to kill from a while away, some don't. If you're disappointed by different ammo having a different function but not being a whole new kettle of fish to fire, we have different expectations.

Well it's great to hear it's confirmed. Any idea when it will be out for test drive then completely out?

No, release date's don't happen because we have a very unpredictable schedule (bugs get reported, other features need working on, etc)

I suppose I was looking at the game too much as a finished game in need of polish instead of a foundation for cool new things when I said they would be a disappointment, and I shouldn't have. I'll keep hoping the class gets other toys to play with instead of trying to make sure the next change to them will "complete" the archer.

well since we dont have wooden walls yet... anyways i was thinking about water? i mean if there is fire there should be something to put it out? how to explain.... well i guess the physics of terraria and the "hold space to float minecraft" sorta thing, you can also drown.

This Thread is too general and starts to derail more and more. Please check out the "suggestion" forum, where things like this have been suggested a lot. Also you can make new threads for discussing something you plan on putting on the suggestion forum in case you want to discuss your ideas without suggesting them outright (for some reason).
