    Yes, I know.
I spoiled the entire game for myself by reading most of the DF wiki before I even played.
    That includes the *****SPOILERS***** stuff.

    EDIT: There, it's been spoilered.

// Jeez dude, spoilers - Beef

i play this game, im a member on the community

people in the forums might say that the game has many possibilities, and they don't know that some people prefer vanilla, and in dwarf fortress vanilla, it's no fun, very dull.

one time i posted a thread on some fun stuff to do, all of them just kept saying the same thing, which is: MOD THE GAME!!!!

What DF needs more than anything is a FUCKING CONSISTENT WAY TO OPERATE THE GOD DAMN MENUS. That pisses me off more than anything. Also theres no reason not to use soem sort of fucking graphics engine. Toady isnt the god coder people think he is.

Finally someone agrees with me, I'm already starting to think Toady first aimed his goal for a dull fantasy game, but as more people come and thought it's some fun game, Toady hid his fantasy goal.

Dwarf Fortress gets boring over time, even the Fortress Mode said fun mode, is very boring, even Adventure Mode is boring too.
    Game's too boring.

Its not that its boring to me, its that it is HORRIBLY lacking in consistency. Toady just adds stuff all willy nilly on a whim and doesnt bother for it to be cleanly integrated into the game. He keeps adding more and more to the game so he can afford to live.

Thread purged. Keep it on topic, or, if it's going to be tangentially related to DF, don't just argue mindlessly without any evidence or logic.

I honestly think it's really good, adventure mode is awesome too. You might not be the kind of person to play a game continuously for a long time without a lot of results.

After a couple of years of playing DF, I finally tried adventure mode today. I had a lot of fun.
This is my entourage and I bravely facing an army of guinea cocks.
    guineacockMassacre.png
A few deaths later, I happened upon a necromancer's tower. I led a couple of the undead back to town, where they faced off against the local stray cat population plus a handful of geese. They put up one hell of a fight, but were ultimately defeated by sheer numbers.
necrosVersusCats.png Finally, as I wandered through an abandoned town, I was assaulted by a mob of dwarven merchants. I ran away, but returned to find them sleeping soundly. I proceed to quietly bash their heads in, but not quietly enough. Someone sounded the alarm and they proceed to gang rape me...to death. dwarfAttack.png If you've never experienced adventure mode, read a tutorial and give it a shot. Make sure you have a few hours to kill though.

I use Raving's tileset, but it's basically the standard one squished into a square grid. I don't mind ASCII graphics, but rectangular tiles are really ugly in a game like this.

DF doesn't have any soft core fans.

I only play adventure mode as a flying, fire-spitting slade colossus.

And rampaging at night is the best thing to do.
Because slade colossus kicks have quite some power, i usually board the guard towers and kick off all the guards sleeping on duty :3

Anyway, dont EVER walk onto a market when you are a enemy of that civ.
They'll just pile on you, and group-rape you to death with their butter knifes.

Recently, i started playing DF again, here is an account of my most head-desk worthy adventurer's adventures:

Kill Vamp -> Drink Vamp Blood, Become Vamp -> Go to Necro-Tower and kill Necromancers, find slab -> Cannot read due to me not realizing there was a reading skill

    DUDE WHAT.jpg

Angrily, i started a new character, naming him "Dracula" for pure amusement.

Five minutes later, my left arm has been torn off by a sturgeon that i proceded to tear to pieces.

    Either way, i have a Vamp-Necromancer now.

Oh, hold on - I'm thinking of the guy that got mobbed by Goblins in a sewer.

    Fuck.

EDIT: Allknowingfrog, what race was you character?

I played about 7 rounds as a human, because the tutorial recommended that as the easiest for beginners. I died quickly and horribly each time, so it's probably good that I went the easy route. On my best run, I and my five amigos were finishing off a wounded member of some minor band of outlaws. I caught a lethal facefull of mace despite my full suit of iron armor. desk flip.jpg
It's free and it runs on PC, Mac and Linux. The only thing stopping you is how much you value your time.

    EDIT:
And btw, dont EVER do quests that lead you into the labyrinth of death and despair sewers.
(the only way to not fail a quest is to kill the quest giver :P. In the next update you may actually be able to do that without making the entire civ hostile to you, and making them unleash their butter-knify wrath on you.)

Its dangerous to go alone, take this! (not 100% up-to-date, but should usually work, just remember to take wheelbarrows when you embark, else your dwarves will be hauling stuff more then they will be doing anything. autodump to not have to carry stones to hell and back (in DFhack). and browse the DF forums, familiarize yourself with the community and the injokes. The DF forums is divided into the lower boards and the upper boards, where other games is the gate between the two. Watch out for the whispers.) I recommend downloading the Lazy newb pack to start. phoebus is the best tileset.

Its not a 'what mode to try first' thing, its comparing a roguelike to a RTS.
