'i have heard of a lagless design, building it from top-to-bottom'
Also, how would you else get magma to the surface?
DF without magma = elven fortress.

I downloaded DF a few months ago, never got around to playing it until recently.
I love it, even though all I manage to do is set up a small poorly-planned fortress and sit with my thumb up my ass and hope for more migrants. After that, it's great, but I usually get owned by some goblin ambush because I still don't know how to set up a good military.
    Speaking of which...
My most recent game was ended by a pack of killer pandas. Obviously they don't like it when dorfs run out with knives to kill them.

You should see the giant badgers.
    o-o

Anyway, military is quite complicated, i recommend weapontraps across a 1-wide bridge over a huge gap, goblins will ocasionally dodge off and fall to their death (wich is awesome to look at). behind that a bit of cagetrapspam to catch survivors.
Green glass serrated discs are awesome, you should try these, not expensive at all, and very effective.

Search the df forums for some military guides.
Or temporarily go back to 40d, that had a much less complicated military system (but you can do less with it)

Nah, elephants are the worst....they still haunt me in my nightmare's from Boatmurdered D: Anyhoo, sorry I haven't been active in a while, been away in *cough cough* "sunny" Wales for the weekend, barrels of fun. I reckon we should aim for about 10-12 people, simply because...well... hopefully there's someone out there who's worse than me in DF :B): I can dream.

I play on Low savagery and still lose *fairly quickly*, so I earn the distinction of being the word manager ever. :B):

    Fixed that for you.

Btw, low savagery is not a general game option, its a worldgen option. even if you set savagery to low you can still embark on a terryfing glacier and lose quickly.
A good place to start is a relatively flat place that has a stream (not a brook), good amount of trees and other vegetation, deep/shallow metalS, a good amount of soil, and flux stone without an aquifer.

So I've noticed. Also apparently "Wilderness" doesn't mean just wild untamed lands, judging from the very early zombie invasion and resulting massacre of quite a few of my dwarves. At least I got quite a lot of stuff from the elf and goblin corpses, although the zombified kiwi cock skin made me hurt myself laughing.

You embarked on the edge of a evil biome, you can press f1,f2,f3,f4 etc to view all the biomes.
this wiki article explains it quite well.
So remember, you can embark over multiple biomes, not all of them may (or even need) to have flux, shallows, deeps etc.

    EDIT:
Also, hit tab until you see the screen that has things like "goblins ---" "elves" "humans" "dwarfs" and make sure there isnt a "tower" entry there. else you may get some very unexpected !!!fun!!!

Use glass iron discs, green glass is cheap and it works perfectly, no need to spill iron on that.
