It is really hard to say for me. All these independent developed games appeal to me in many different ways. So that is why I am going to list a few of these and give you my reasons to why I like them so much. Very brief, here we go!
    The Chillaxer
Few games has made me feel so sedated as Under the Garden.
It is a beautiful game in which you take control over this pixelated anonymous dude in your quest of survival. It is incredibly relaxing so if you are looking for something to wind down with, go grab a cup of tea/coffee, and boot this game up.
    The Destructor
King Arthur's Gold, need I say more?
It is getting close to one of those games that I've played the most in my whole life. I can't get enough of the carnage that is going on within and the community is amazing. I am very excited for what the future hold for this game, and I do hope that I will be here during the end of days.
    The No-Brainer
You are a bunny that jumps on bells while it is snowing. Play it. If you are feeling frisky, go play the original copter game.
    The Platformer
Dustforce. Great platformer with fluid animations and controls alike. The music is some of the best I've ever heard coming from a game. The leaderboard and replay function is also a great plus for you that wants to be the very best, like no one ever was.
    Honourable mentions
Bastion. While not offering the best combat system in the world it still manages to captivate you with its increidble story telling, the visuals and music aren't that bad either!
Legend of Grimrock. A breath of fresh air in my opinion. I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I have done. The whole thing feels like a true adventure and you grow somewhat fond of your party characters as the game progress.
    ---------------
I can no longer afford paying for all these new titles like I used to. It is the reality and it sucks. That is why indie games are so damn great. They are cheap and for the very most part, a great deal of fun. That is if you do som basic research before buying it.

A few more to check out.

    Hydorah

A GREAT little title, similar to Gradius and Life Force. Super challenging, nostalgic and amazingly well done.

    Rockboshers

A funky little demake of (I believe it's supposed to be) Red Faction. It's done in the ZX Spectrum palette, and is actually a lot of fun.

    Runman

A nice, interesting and cartoony run and jump platformer where you play as a star racing around the world. Quite a few stages, a bunch of funny boss fights, and unlockable characters! FUN!

    Super Crate Box

Can't believe I forgot this one... Hectic, awesome arcade action where the object is to collect as many crates as possible, each with a new weapon inside, and not to kill the enemies. Strangely addicting.

    My personal favorites:

    Dwarf Fortress

Roguelike strategy game where you can manage a lot of dwarves, craft unthinkable things, prepare raw mosquito brains, kill a full horde of goblins/elves/zombies/humans/giant eagles/ponies/badgers/etc./, dig, drown in a river, find megabeasts, fall into madness, become the king of the cats, and everything else you can imagine.
Hard to understand at first but the wiki can solve the player's general lack of intuition.

    Note: Losing is fun!

    Pic says everything

    Touhou Project

A bullet-hell vertical shooting game with flying lolis and lazors etc.
It's hard, has an epic soundtrack and it's completely made by ZUN.
Note: Playing this implies being part of a dangerous yuri fandom.

Currently playing Lone Survivor, I totally recommend it but can't give my opinion if I haven't finished it yet

    • ☼Dwarf Fortress☼. Being a murderous little psycho has never been so fun. Especially with everyone and their grandmother out trying to pull your fortress to ruins.
    • Minecraft. Not going to type anything meaningful here, it'd be a waste
    • 8Bit World, by Treesun studios. Supposedly still under development, but the guy's been slacking off the past few months. I'll put it here anyway, I like how it plays. Also half the things that exist in this game don't do shit.
    • Cube World. Not even released yet, but looks sweet. Search up "wollay" on google to get it, too lazy to post a link.
    • Terraria 's definitely worth a few runs through. I didn't think it was so hot (especially the PvP system/Multiplayer interface. Blegh.) but if you like crap like this, go for it.

The Touhou series is great, but a good portion of it is based upon trying to be hard.

Whereas you have shmups like Cho Ren Sha 68k that are hard just because they're hard, and that's all there is to say on the matter.
