    This was quite a jump from page two the four. What did I miss in three?

    Anywho, sorta back on topic, I generally don't do anything about someone making a swastika UNLESS they are actually trying to be offensive (I muted then banned a guy who was ranting about Nazism once), or if someone asks me to. If someone is offended, then I ask the person building them to stop. If they're a decent human being, they stop, if the don't, they can have an hour ban.

    I would also totally do the same thing over a cross. If someone was being preachy and telling people they're going to burn in hell, and they don't stop, even after a mute, a ban on them. If someone would ask me that they feel uncomfortable with someone obsessively building crosses or they feel offended, I would treat it just like a swastika situation.

    If I'm not admin-ing, I'll just bitch at the builder to stop or at the admin to make them stop. Or just deal with, I'm not offended. One lucky thing about being raised in an atheist household is that I really don't give a shit about any religious symbol.

    Although, if you pester me saying that a fucking smily face, multi-color lights, or giant "lel" in the sky is offense, you're probably going to be the one that ends up muted.

    This is what I'm talking about, an admin like that.

    To the offended People:
    Try not to be offended by the symbol?
    For example, in real life you encounter someone making a big nazi flag on the top of his house? what will you do? Well if you can't deal with it , then that's life. You shouldn't be offended by any symbols, it will just make you more and more and more mad on those symbols. And what if your enemies will use that symbol to tease you? It will just ruin your life. I know there are lot of people died because of you know that already.
    But anger and pure madness to the symbol are not the keys to revenge, you can't revenge because there's nothing to revenge for. You just live your life, and be happy, be successful. :) lels I'm going off-topic and off-topic'er.
    edit : I hope it will help some people.

    Nice to know you approve, BL-- I'm trying to learn/make for lost time, as per our agreement. :p

    {edit}
    Also, to people in general, now that the thread is in Misc. please no more talk about "this is off-topic, you should be talking about how this relates to KAG only". The reason I moved the thread GD --> Misc. is because there's still discussion to be had, just that we've covered the "just KAG" bit and are now looking at the topic within broader scope. ;)

    "Discussion"? I'm sorry to say that this thread has been reduced to mindless rambling by your unnecessary and unreasonable anger. It doesn't suprise me when I cannot spot a single positive or constructive comment in this thread, or any other threads, for that matter.

    Pardon? This has been an incredibly healthy discussion, whereas most times these things devolve into name-calling.

    Just because people don't agree with you doesn't mean it's negative feedback. We just disagree.

    I'm surprised none of you have mentioned Mao Zedong, he was a communist leader, and far worse then hitler. The death toll due to this fella was from 30-70 million. Not an exact number due to the chinas government not releasing it. If anything people should be more offended by the hammer and sickle, then a slightly turned peace simple.

    "Mao's forces killed the usual enemies of communism: landowners, rent seekers, some businessmen, employees and members of the old government. Ten years after coming to power, a failed experiment in agrarian reform saw millions die of starvation. A few years after this, Mao unleashed Red Guards, mostly young people, to kill, denounce, imprison and disempower most of the officials who had flourished under communism. Thus a while generation of potential rivals to Mao were killed off by mobs of young people, called 'Revolutionary Guards'." -stolen from some website

    One, my point is that people find the Christian cross more acceptable than the swastika. I'll post a quote from the original Straw Dogs that sums up my feelings on the matter.

    (in terms of the atomic bomb)
    Reverend: Radiation. That's an unfortunate dispensation.
    David: Surely is. Yes, indeed.
    Reverend: As long as it's not another bomb.
    [beat]
    Reverend: You're a scientist - can you deny the responsibility?
    David: Can you? After all, there's never been a kingdom given to so much bloodshed as that of Christ.

    As I've stated several times, PM me any time with your little Bambi routine, I'd feel perfectly fine handling it there. As far as positive or constructive comments, they all have been, what do you consider positive, agreeing with you? There have been a few, none have been constructive, however it seems the majority of the thread has been semi-constructive posts as to why Swastikas are NOT as bad as you think, so it makes me wonder exactly how bias you are while reading this over.

    Sly, while some things raised here have been less-than-ideal (I'm thinking of some spurious points made about Christianity, bonesauce, although I totally get why such sentiments exist towards organised religion ["Christian" or otherwise]-- but that's another debate for another time) on the whole this has been an rather level-headed discussion (particularly when you consider the volatile nature of our topic).

    As a suggestion, rather than trying to continue a meta-discussion about the level of constructiveness in this thread (something that is in itself non-constructive) maybe you could focus on the topic at hand or, alternatively, cease trying to derail things (i.e. if you want to talk meta-discussion further, take it to PM; otherwise I will have no choice but to infract you for being off-topic).

    Slightly Off-topic: But PM'ing someone could count as harassment, and I don't know what these guys will do.
    On-topic: I don't know why people are talking about crosses if the title of the thread is "Nazi symbols in kag'. :huh?:

    'Harassment' generally only applies if you're doing something, they ask you to stop, and you then keep on doing it. Additionally, if you remain polite throughout your discourse there's little grounds for them to complain.

    Crosses are being compared/contrasted with Nazi swastikas because they are both symbols that we are all familiar with. In the context of this discussion, both are relevant.

    The Swastika is a symbol that used to stand for peace and has devolved into being Hilter's Stamp of Approval. The cross is also a symbol, one that used to stand for holiness and peace, but instead stands for organized crime- I mean, religion.

    Two symbols, a comparison if you will. Why wouldn't it be relevant? It seems I struck a nerve, and frankly you shouldn't let my views affect you at all. I care not what you believe, I just think that if you have doubts about anything you speak your doubts. Not sink into the abyss, silent, because the world has made the subject taboo. I think organized religion is a form of organized crime, and Hitler's "Aryan" race was just a ploy to try and reach God-like status. He brainwashed the masses into following his bullshit, and I see no difference with Christianity.

    Also, the thread no longer pertains to KAG, so the thread title should be changed. I'm sorry we don't agree Sly, but to say this discussion/debate isn't constructive is flat out wrong.

    superlateedit: And what exactly do you think is gonna happen to you if someone PMs you? OH MAN, CLICKING "LEAVE CONVERSATION" IS IMPROBABLE! THIS IS HARASSMENT! We might be assholes, but we're not gonna "harass" you based on this topic.

    Opinions are like the hog's assholes, everyone has one. (StarTropics 2 reference, can I get a what what?)

    Just a note, bone, but for the sake of argument it's probably better (in this thread anyway) to focus on the current relevance of swastikas rather than their historical origins (i.e. talk about the Nazi version only) as continuing to refer to both of them only clouds the issues at stake. What I mean is that, whatever the swastika might mean outside of being a fascist symbol, the reason it tends to cause offense is because of the connection with WWII & the Holocaust-- not it's prior history. In effect, by taking the swastika and doing what he did under it, Hitler created a symbol entirely distinct from the Hindu one (whatever the visual similarities).

    Also, if

    Well, it would seem to me that the way organized religion works is very similar to organized crime. Not just crime since clearly, nobody is flat out breaking the law... But really, think about it. Some people are considered more important than others (priests/cardinals/Popes to dons/mob bosses), are always fighting with other crime families to expand on their empire (multiple wars throughout history, even the war in Iraq, etc), using their "muscle" to influence the decision-making of people in power (think gay marriage bans compared to paying off police/politicians)... There are tons of analogies I can make, but what it all boils down to is that while most Christian work is done out of the goodness of their hearts (missionary work, collections for charities/people in need/etc) at the core organized religion can be seen as being far more sinister. As I've stated, it isn't the WHOLE group of people... While my family was in extremely dire straights (dad was waiting on acceptance to Social Security income as he could no longer work due to spinal cord injury/degenerative disc disease) the local church had a sort of "food drive" specifically for my family. We received quite a lot of canned and preserved food that lasted a family of five for months.

    Really, just like in politics, law enforcement, etc. it is the people higher up on the food chain that cause a lot of the corruption I'm referring to. Sometimes I wonder if the people voting to ban gay marriage even KNOW any homosexual people, and if they met one they would run away like a 5 year old screaming, "Cooties!" Religion is far too biased considering modern society... If we were to follow EVERYTHING the Bible said (in regards to law and religion), we should be able to stone farmers to death for planting more than one crop on their field, and any woman that intervenes in a fight between two men by kicking one in the balls should have her hand cut off. Don't believe me? Read up on the book of Leviticus sometime.

    As I've said, this is all my own point of view, since such things are SUBJECTIVE, and this is why most discussions of this caliber go awry. Like I've stated before, it takes a lot of courage and dedication to hold a belief such as that, and I can respect it. But I truly think historical significance of these symbols is entirely rational and relevant considering the swastika's current viewpoint comes from a point in HISTORY. So why not go further back? Just like the Christian cross. It's also a symbol that has different views by different people. I see it as a symbol of fear-mongering and corruption, whereas someone like my grandmother sees it as a beacon of hope and salvation. It's all subjective. You choose to be offended. I have to see the Christian cross just about every day, and Sunday I have to eat dinner with my family in CELEBRATION of this symbol and it's history... But the only way I'll be offended is if I allow myself to be. Frankly, people making swastikas to troll irks me, but I just shrug it off. Everyone else can too.

    I'm taking a course right now that covers a lot of ancient history and prehistory, and the history of Christianity is pretty interesting. Without Christianity, Judiasm, and other early monotheistic religions, its hard to see how society could have cohesively organized itself. Religions give people a common belief, that rulers can then use to unite a group of disparate tribes, forming something similar to what we call a nation. I think the development of monotheistic religions was an important advancement, almost like a technology, but it has obviously run its course and today its just an annoying relic.

    While you may be right about religion doing some bad things, I still stand by my belief that religion HAS done some very good things.

    Also, which religion in particular? Different religions have done many different things in there individual histories.

    In the face of people asking whether religion has ever done anything good, yes, it has, even if that is *balanced* with the shitty stuff that has happened too. Try being the root of most of modern culture by distant routes, and generally being a huge influence in basically anything that has happened over the previous civilized times.

    Yes, bad things happened, but also good things, like art. Just sayin', it's not something you can really question. :P

    I'm not asking for a reply in this thread (seeing as it's a wholly different topic from 'offensive symbols'-- i.e. it's another topic for another time) but just fyi, Andr01d, so day I'll be asking for clear, straight-forward reasons for considering religion defunct. :p
    ----

    Believe me, I'm well familiar with Lev. ;)
    I kinda see where you're coming from, but just because something comes from a particular point in history is not sufficient reason to bring up something else that can also be historically placed. Everything that happens (even this post I'm writing) has a historical basis because as soon as it happens it's now in the past-- i.e. it's now a part of history.

    To put it in formula:
    • A occurs at a particular point in history x for reasons Q
    • B is rooted historically at y for reasons R
    • The is no reason to consider A and B in tandem unless in some significant (rather than superficial) fashion:
      • A == B, or
      • x == y, or
      • Q == R
    • If one of the above holds true then it's feasible to link A and B through either similarity or dissimilarity-- although determining which of those it is requires a closer study of A, B, and their respective contexts.
    So, looking at the Hindu symbol & the Nazi symbol we see they share these traits:
    1. They look similar
    2. They have (once you're done translating) similar names
    3. Both have a symbolic relevance now as well as back in the day
    Examining these traits more closely:
    1. Superficial (after all, all mushrooms look kinda similar)
    2. Superficial (people name things, but that doesn't mean the name is a particularly good fit)
    3. Significant (both were symbols that represented ideas/ideals)
    However, on studying point #3, we notice that the meanings invested into the two symbols are quite different:
    • Hindu swastika --> 'lucky charm', used to evoke blessings from the gods, representative of one's 'higher self'
    • Nazi swastika --> fascism, biological racism, antisemitism, fanatical nationalism
    Additionally, looking into the history of the swastika it is plain that many, many, manygroups have used it over the years (it being a nice, funky looking geometric shape) and have invested a myriad of different meaning into it.

    The conclusion that I draw from all this is that Hindu swastika =/= Nazi swastika and, more over, that if we're talking about "Offensive Symbols" (rather than the overly broad topic of "Symbols" as a whole) I think it's fair to say that (other than pointing out, in passing, that it exists) the Hindu swastika does not belong in the discussion as it's not particularly offensive. :p

    ...

    Good heck that's a long post. >.<

    {edit}
    Fyi: I've changed the topic name Nazi Symbols --> Offensive Symbols as I feel that better reflects the nature of the debate we're having here.
