OK, for example: Christianity. Groups from local churches and stuff sometimes go around in soup vans and feed the poor. Isn't that a good thing? Also, major charities like the Salvation Army and the St Vincent de Paul Society also help to take care of the poor in the name of their God and religion.
"Bible"? I think you'll find that those rules are according to the Torah, and not the Bible because the Bible continues on to discard those harsh rules and makes new ones.

Sly, I think the key point that Bone makes there is that the Bible did actually make those rules, and they were rules done by religion and stuff. I presume Judaism still has those in a more prominent position, due to their use of the old testament for stuff, but don't quote me on that.
    Also, what FBB says.

And if we're looking at the good stuff of these situations, I'm pretty sure that Hitler and his Nazi chums dragged Germany out of a stupendous economic crisis. Surely that's as good as a few soup vans, since people no longer needed wheelbarrows of money to buy a loaf of bread anymore?

    OY!!!

You're derailing + don't know jack-poodle what you're talking about. Please leave issues concerning the Bible to another thread and (in the meantime) go and do some solid reading of said book before you commence discussion of said topic.

My inner theologian thanks you in advance (and my inner moderator sighs in relief & puts down the infract-o-stick).

    {edit}
And don't think I'm not aware that Matt 5:18 can be simultaneously used for and against both bone & Sly's positions. I'm nothing if not a wicked bastard of a theology student. :fcp::bird:

That's actually true, but didn't he do that by annexing the Low Countries? Or am I wrong? I'm a little fuzzy on this.

Please don't make me also make the argument that so did the third reich, because I'd honestly not want to do that, it would just further the fact that you haven't been to 9th grade, because seriously we'd be bounds behind in many scientific fields.

    1. Obviously not as much as Christianity. See my later comment.
    2. Is throwing around ad hominims your job? Not a very respectable one, I must say.

There is a good side to everything, except those said side does not appeal or apply to.

In any case the Nazi party saved Germany from the treaty of Versailles before it fulfilled its purpose which was to potentially permanently weaken Germany so it may never commit itself to another war, If I was a German Citizen I sure would not accept France and assorted foreign powers leeching all of the money and enslaving us as a peoples for the loss of a war without fighting back, when you know you are more than capable of doing so.

The entire Treaty was underhanded, because of that it was literally a war for freedom and was seen as so in the eyes of most of the world, as they were not aware of Nazi Germany doing anything else other than fighting to escape the grips of a treaty that would mark the death of it as a nation along with its peoples.

You see concentration camps as they are the worst side of Nazi Germany and discovered near the end, but before the war people saw a Country fighting for its very freedom.

As for religion, it is better for a immoral man to potentially follow a good book than it is for him to go with no book guiding his life at all.
Islamic Militants, Crusaders, Bible Thumpers all share the respect in that they are very aggressive humans, with a penchant for violence and shoving their values down your throat, without religion guiding them to what partial ends they uphold they would be far worse than now.

Without religion a lot of religious peoples would be a menace to your overall safety within this world, so you cannot hate on it for fulfilling its purpose since it potentially keeps people in line and not lashing at humanity.

Also, without Hitler and his chums, we'd never have gotten all these amazing sci-fi stories involving time travel that go back to kill/arrest/molest/go to Oktoberfest with them.

A debate of what Christianity has done for the world versus what `Nazism` has would be damn near impossible to do without being subjective in some way. That said JTG summed up some of the good of both very well, it is quite true that over time Christianity(Catholicism as well since we're really talking about religions using the cross), has done for mostly people sick of the mind in some way, while it's hard to say that they've done all that's possible many people that would be worse alcoholics are much more tempered because of it, violent people in general, perverted people in general (though this goes both ways I'd say it's also a bit to blame for some of that shit).

Religion in general totally does do some good, I think the funny thing is though a lot of that good people do without religion as well (earlier you said that religious people give things away and help the homeless, not only religious people do this).

As a matter of fact I am part of a christian church, yet I do not believe in god, I only go for the outreach mostly as every few weekends they do things like pepsi give aways, free car washes and raise stuff for the homeless etc, I haven't done it in about a year now due to being too busy, but I would regularly and this had nothing at all to do with the religion, it had to do with the fact that it's the right thing to do. There is actually a TED talk about creating something similar to what religion does in communities today for atheists, because right now most of the positives of religion have nothing to do with religion, they are just a place where people create a larger community that is able to propel itself and influence the community in positive ways if it is prepared to. In these ways I love some churches (not because of the religious aspects but because of the community aspects). These are generally specifically called community churches though, they're a bit different, but I believe more important by far than the older style self-enveloped churches, that just take a portion of their monthly income and toss it towards homeless/battered women/blank cause.

    --
Expect some point in the next 10-20 years to see atheists have something similar to a church, my church that I go to currently is very much so cause to understand why 'God' and religion isn't needed for a church, the pastor doesn't really focus on god and constantly actually relates to things without him, I started going probably when I was about 15 and for the most part just so I could pull apart what he was saying, remove any instances of the bible from the equation and balance whether it would still make a good guideline for life or not and go from there, usually inspect it a bit and attempt to relate it to other things.

The main issue I see with an 'Atheism Church', or really what shouldn't be tied to being Atheism but essentially just a church sans religious aspects would be the recycling of material, there is a lot to go through and infact a bit more than a church with less to simply expand on or a book to go to that says "Hmm let's talk about THIS this week", but I'm sure it'll happen nonetheless as it's already in the works (check out the TED talk on it)

I've noticed a really common misconception, that Hitler pulled Germany out of the depression the Treaty of Versaille. He didn't at all, Germany was still in horrible, horrible poverty and had insane inflation, and in the eyes of the rest of the world, the country was broke and deep, deep in debt. What Hitler did was turn the country into a war production machine, able to produce military equipment very, very fast. Also, in Germany, it was basically serve the military or die. There wasn't a simple draft, it wasn't up to you to volunteer. If you didn't get the hell out of their, you were basically a Nazi, whether you wanted to be or not. Not that a lot of the citizens objected. Germany during that time was shut out much like North Korea now; Germany's citizens had no idea what was going on at all. All they knew is what German propaganda told them, which is basically to hate everyone that is not the master race.

In short, German citizens didn't even know what the Treaty of Versaille was, it wasn't guiding their hatred for other European countries. When a country is so shut out though, the dictators have almost complete control over the public.

As for religion, the issue today is that it is naturally dogmatic and strict, but in today's society in modern countries (Western Europe, North America, some of South America, Japan, Oceania), dogmatic ideologies and beliefs don't mesh well. Dogmatic means that someone will blindly follow something organized and rigid and shut out all opposing ideas. The problem is, in our much more cosmopolitan society, we sorta have to deal with everyone from every angle of every opinion. Religion doesn't deal well with other opinions, it naturally wants to shut out all other opinions it doesn't agree with. So, we have issues nowadays with religious people trying to block other people from doing something else. I realize that religion is great for some people, but socially, it's a bit of a hinderance to progressivism.

Take the recent gay marriage rights issue for example. A lot of the people opposing it are doing so for religious reasons. This is an extremely dogmatic example, because it is literally delusional: arguing to ban something for religious reasons in a secular country with separation of church and state. This is an issue because nowadays all minorities can have quite loud voices, thanks to the internet and other ways of mass spreading of information, and we can very openly challenge our government and society.

Religion, in my view, is not really bad, evil, or destructive, but it's old, outdated, and is a social hinderance. Just my opinion of course, I was raised in a 100% atheist environment, so I have a pretty large bias.

I also just realized we kinda have gotten of track of the whole 'symbols' part.

Apparently yours is to get butthurt that people don't agree with you. He gave you MORE than a valid argument, and that's all you got? You ain't cut out for this debate thing, I say gtfo.

Actually, I look at it the other way. These people believe their militant actions and violent behaviors will lead them to a perfect, blissful afterlife... If these people thought they would just die and rot in the ground, do you think there would be people willing to commit suicide to bomb embassy buildings? I really don't think so. If people had no idea what the afterlife held, they wouldn't DREAM of killing themselves.

If you want to see it that way sure, I have no job, if you mean what I 'do', it's try my damn hardest to stop seeing games ruined by thinskinned people like you who cry about everything and want saying the word fag to be a bannable offense or building a certain shape to bannable because you can't deal with it, that's my problem.

The worst part when it comes to people like you though is that I don't care if you actually have a fucking reason to hate it, and I don't mean "My great grandfather died in the holocaust oh no D:" I mean a legitimate reason you could come up with why you find it to really be a problem not just because it offends you, and you can't, so you are completely ignorant of the fact and you just say "Hey it should be bannable, people can get offended" like being offended ever killed anyone, I'm offended every day, most of the time every few minutes. Grow some skin and get over it, I seriously have to wonder if people like you are the children of overeager soccer mom's or if you somehow are just that sheltered that you can't handle when someone says anything negative ever, in fact I find it must be unhealthy as a step out into the real world must be painful coming from something like that and I can't imagine such a household as anything but a mass murder waiting to happen.

So it looks like the lesson to be learned here is "Leave this kind of crap up to the discretion of the server owners" because it's horribly contentious and if you don't like it you can go find another server

I'm struggling to find what this discussion has amounted to. Next, BlueLuigi will 'point out' that I have somehow caused all the problems here. I still don't think that the Cross is more offensive than the Nazi Swastika. It's the other way around.

Sly, welcome to the real world. Arguments aren't always totally objective, especially when they're not being done in a particularly serious environment. Stating that something is offensive isn't an argument, it's a totally subjective response, an emotive reaction to something, and it only even nears a valid objection if it's being forced upon you, and there is no way to avoid it.
If you aren't enjoying something, but it isn't against the rules, then you need someone with the vested power to make judgement on a situation. If there is no-one around to intervene in such circumstances, then you need to deal with it.

BlueLuigi has given some pretty damn good arguments, if I say so myself, and it remains that your objection to swastikas is a subjective view. The trouble is, you've clung to this view as if you feared for life itself, without making any ground or acknowledging in depth the arguments placed at your metaphorical doorstep. He's assuming that you have led a sheltered life until now, because of the very way you are reacting to the confrontational nature of this online debate.
The best step forward is to evaluate what you say, but not necessarily outright reject it. Retaining your opinions is a great thing, just make sure they're justified, and don't slip into a dogmatic situation.

You have a good point, and you may be right. However, I don't think I will stand for the insult to mine or anybody else's beliefs. Also, I don't think that BL's angry way to argue things is entirely appropriate. He has given some good arguments, but those were nearly lost in the storm of his apparent fury. He seems to regard me as some sort of degenerate or something.

Sly, I'm not him, so I can't tell you whether or not he does regard you as a degenerate, but I have no doubt he'll see this before long and confirm his viewpoint. From experience with him, one of the reasons he would talk down to someone is if they genuinely appeared to be an idiot, demonstrating inability to accept/comprehend external arguments, or if they just adopted a plain stupid viewpoint.

But let's not get too competitive here.

I'm not sure whether that's possible, sir. He (or FBB, still fuzzy on that) once created a thread where the only purpose was to flame anybody who called KAG 1.0 (the next update) KAG 1.0 (that's me). Honestly, I feel a little uncomfortable trying to raise my points against someone like this if I'm just going to get trodden on just for my religious affiliation.
